First Edition
Unbound. Condition: Fine. Small handbill. One sheet of thin coated paper measuring 3½" x 5½", printed recto only. Tiny nick on one edge else fine. From Matthews' 1885 Grolier Club lecture *Modern Bookbinding Practically Considered*, the first paragraph instructs the reader on the proper way to open a book and the second tells the sad story of when a good customer of the well-known binder decidedly did *not* know how to open a book: "'How beautifully your bindings open!' I almost fainted. He had broken the back of the volume and it had to be rebound." No publication information printed, but a handsome and ephemeral little survivor that we think might look nice framed.
