Nell'ipotesi sempre più verosimile di un Ğlungoğ Settecento, Alessandro Verri con le Notti romane è uno degli artisti dell'antico, come Alfieri e Piranesi, che esprimono un neoclassicismo perplesso e notturno, definito come Ğorrificoğ da studiosi delle arti figurative e della letteratura. All'interno delle prime due parti dell'opera verriana, Al Sepolcro de' Scipioni (1792) e Sopra le ruine della magnificenza antica (1804) e della terza, le Veglie contemplative, non data alle stampe sino all'edizione critica di Renzo Negri (1967), i colloqui dei defunti e del pellegrino vivente mostrano il volto cruento della gloria romana, sulla scia dell'illuminismo più radicalmente critico dell'eroismo quiritario. Nel ruolo di guida alle rovine, visitate nottetempo dalle ombre, il protagonista scopre la delusione che le afferra, malinconica e inquietante, al cospetto della devastazione storica e naturale dei monumenti romani. Questo grandioso romanzo visionario e archeologico ha un abbozzo serio-comico, l'Antiquario fanatico, inedito anch'esso fino al 1967, e troncato dall'autore per dare spazio alla tonalità solenne delle Notti, che conservano, tuttavia, un'impronta dialogica risalente alla famiglia socratico-lucianea, filtrata non solo da Fénelon e Fontenelle, ma dal relativismo illuministico. Dopo le Avventure di Saffo, con l'ellenismo patetico e mitologico che le contraddistingue, e prima della Vita di Erostrato, romanzo di condanna del titanismo intellettuale postrivoluzionario, il capolavoro verriano approda alla Ğapologia della seconda Romağ, costruita sulle rovine della prima, che ha nutrito lo splendore cristiano con le Ğantiche reliquieğ del paganesimo.
