A fine copy of the first printing. *** "The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum draws more visitors than any other museum in the world--90,000 a day in the summertime--and the highlight of summer 2007 at the NASM will be 'Fly Now,' the exhibit of air travel posters featured in this unique companion volume which combines arresting, colorful art, rare archival material, and a unique approach to aeronautical history. The posters-most of them never before published-feature barnstormers, gliders, and flying boats; the earliest passenger flights, the first luxury-liners, mail carriers, jets, and much more. Spanning a century and a half, they combine the popular art and the commerce of their eras, with both explored in the entertaining, informative text by a longstanding National Air and Space Museum curator. From 19th-century circus impresarios offering rides in gaudy hot-air balloons to the sleek 21st-century airliners, they offer a fascinating illustrated history of flight as it evolved from an exotic realm inhabited only by visionaries and daredevils into our modern world of speedy jets and frequent flyers-no longer extraordinary, perhaps, but still echoing with the exhilarating thrill and glamorous excitement captured here. Countless visitors to the museum's traveling poster exhibition and the permanent exhibition 'America by Air' will delight in the gorgeous and wonderful graphics collected in this appealing, affordable book-and so will aviation buffs, armchair travelers, and poster connoisseurs everywhere. / Dr. Joanne Gernstein London has been a curator at National Air and Space Museum (NASM) for 19 years, 16 of those as curator of the1400-piece poster collection. As a historian at the NASM, she has contributed to such major exhibitions as 'Legend, Memory, and the Great War in the Air' (about WWI), and 'Where Next, Columbus?' (on the state of exploration on the 500th anniversary of Columbus's landing in 1492). She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.

First Edition
Published in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Fly Now! presents a visually striking survey of aviation history through rare and iconic poster art drawn from the museum's renowned collection. Spanning nearly two centuries - from early ballooning spectacles to the jet and space ages - the book pairs bold graphic design with authoritative historical commentary. Written by Smithsonian curator Joanne Gernstein London, the volume contextualizes each era of flight through commercial, military, and cultural lenses, highlighting how poster art shaped public imagination and reflected evolving attitudes toward air travel. The richly illustrated pages reproduce dozens of posters, many previously unpublished, alongside informative essays and captions. This is the first printing of the 2007 National Geographic hardcover edition, as stated on the copyright page 'First printing, January 2007.' The book is printed on heavy, high-quality paper and designed as a large-format art reference, appealing equally to aviation historians, design enthusiasts, and poster collectors. Clean, tight, and square. Pages bright and unmarked throughout; no writing, stains, or dog-ears. Binding firm; spine straight with no lean. Appears lightly handled. A handsome and accessible museum-quality publication, ideal for collectors of aviation ephemera, graphic design history, and Smithsonian/National Geographic titles. Joanne Gernstein London served for nearly two decades on the curatorial staff of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, including several years as curator of its extensive poster collection. A historian specializing in aviation culture and visual communication, she has contributed to major Smithsonian exhibitions and publications interpreting the public history of flight.

"Culled from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's world-class collection, here are scores of aeronautical posters - most of them never before published - that are guaranteed to enthrall aviation buffs, armchair travelers, and poster connoisseurs everywhere. Fly Now! is both a glorious mix of colorful art, arresting design, and rare archival material, and a unique presentation of the history of flight - nearly two centuries from the Age of Ballooning to the Golden Age to the Jet Age to the Space Age." "The earliest of these posters dates from 1827 and invites Parisians to watch in amazement as a band of visiting American Indians ascend in a hot-air balloon; in the pages that follow, flying machines of every description will take readers to just about everywhere in the world, from North and South America to Europe, Africa, and the Far East. Here are barnstormers, gliders, and flying boats; the earliest passenger flights; the first luxury-liners; the brief but magnificent era of zeppelins; and much more. But this in not just another chronicle of flight milestones; it's also a showcase of stunning graphic design, with each piece revealing the popular art and commercial attitudes of its era. Spanning 180 years, these posters are discussed in the entertaining, informative text by Dr. Joanne Gernstein London, a member of the NASM Curatorial staff for two decades, whose discerning eye and deep knowledge combine to create a book as definitive as it is visually delightful.".

No Binding. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. About the artist: Robert Indiana, born Robert Clark (born September 13, 1928), is an American artist associated with the pop art movement. His "LOVE" print, first created for the Museum of Modern Art's Christmas card in 1965, was the basis for the widely-distributed 1973 United States Postal Service "LOVE" stamp. His media include paper (silk screen) and Cor-ten steel sculpture. Indiana's best known image is the word love in upper-case letters, arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. The iconography first appeared in a series of poems originally written in 1958, in which Indiana stacked LO and VE on top of one another. Then in a painting with the words "Love is God". The red/green/blue image was then created for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964. It was put on an eight-cent U.S. Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of "love stamps"./ This poster is in excellent condition and numbered. Rare and ready to frame. This poster measures 23.75 x 32 inches.
