De la Flechere , Assessor Ballival of Nyon, in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland, on the Death of His Bother, The Reverend John William De La Flechere, Twenty Five Years Vicar of Madeley Shropshire 1786 by Mary Fletcher Printed by J. Eddowes and sold by J. Buckland, in Pater-Noster-Row, London; T. Mills, in Bath; and S. Aris, in Birmingham + R. Hindmarsh 1773 Published in Shrewsbury in 1773, this is the scarce First Edition of John Fletcher's account of the landslip at Buildwas in Shropshire that blocked the River Severn for a number of days, when 18 acres of land slipped down the hillside at The Birches after heavy rains. Fletcher also mentions finding butterflies preserved in the rock that was uncovered by the slip ( actually the tails of Dalmanites trilobites which do have a butterfly like appearance,) these fossils were sent to the British Museum for study, which is possibly the earliest account of finding trilobite fossils in the county. hard to find in First Edition form, the book was reprinted the following year by W. Pine in Bristol. Also bound in this copy is a work by Mary Fletcher ( nee Bosanquet ) the wife of John Fletcher, about the death of her husband, along with an unfinished piece by John Fletcher. Book is bound in an old half leather binding with marbled paper covered boards. 6.5 inches tall approx. 104 pages and 64 pages. CONDITION The binding has some edge rubbing wear else is in good solid condition, internally noticeable foxing to some pages, a noticeable crease and small mark to one page in the second book, else in good general condition.
