John Bate (1919-2015), later librarian at Napier College in Edinburgh, was assistant editor to Derek Stanford on Bless 'Em All, the 1941 NCLC journal summarily banned by the authorities for obscenity. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Wrappers. Spine faded, covers a little marked and creased. Loosely inserted a pencilled manuscript poem, 16 lines, "Suitable Verse For Oasis". "New work by / JOHN BAYLISS / VICTOR TURNER / JOHN ATKINS / DENIS HUDSON / EDITH TURNER / JOHN BATE. / Critical articles by / DEREK STANFORD / CONAN NICHOLAS. / Review section by / DEREK STANFORD". Oasis was his successor journal to X6, co-edited with Stanford. "Why should I not write a poem for Oasis?" asks the anonymous poet. "Xenophon scribbled / Anabasis / (Or was it Edith Sitwell? The lies / Of Cuvier blind my Argus eyes) / . . . / By the Xolotol tree / Man shall ultimately be / Assonantly - almost - free. / Will this do / For Oasis? / It will? / I feel I'm going places!".
