vi, 279 "First Impression, October, 1902" (copyright page). Sound copy of these philosophical ruminations by the Irish sage of fancy -- spoken in his rustic brogue. Observations (1902) was the fifth compilation of Dooley's thoughts, which journalist Dunne began putting into book form in 1899. James Joyce adopted the voice of the fictitious Mr Dooley in his poem Dooleysprudence and gave Dooley at least one mention in Finnegans Wake. Red cloth with pebbled texture and edge tooling; gilt-stamped title, top board; gilt spine lettering, incl. publisher's monogram. Exterior: board edges frayed in two spots, spine sunned and rubbed; dampstain at rear board near spine. Within, generally well-preserved: previous owner's name in light pencil, FFEP; but not markings of any kind to text block; general tanning of paper stock; rear FEP has taken on a small spot of red from cloth. Binding generally sound, despite weakening of glue in a few places between contiguous signatures. No DJ; archival cover supplied. In sum, G+ to VG-. For an excerpt, see photos.
