Presentation copy by the author (inscribed "_____ From the author" on the back of the title page - the recipient's name has been covered over in old ink). Modern cloth binding with gold lettering to spine. Sir John Sinclair (1754 - 1835) was a Scottish writer, famous for his survey of Scottish life, the "Statistical Account of Scotland", published between 1791 and 1799. In this volume, Sinclair describes some of the words and phrases of the Scots language (which he calls a "dialect") and their derivations (e.g. from Latin, Belgic, Saxon etc). He also touches on language usage in London and other parts of England. Condition: Very Good modern binding with a Very Good text block. Scarce. Presention copy from the author. Book.

First and only contemporary edition of the author's first book. Includes a list of words and phrases unique to Scottish arranged by speech and subject matter. Author was active in government and is said to have published more than 350 tracts. In 1793 he became the first president of the Board of Agriculture. Foxing and waving to the parchment paper inside throughout. Otherwise a good copy of a remarkable cultural contribution. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Inscribed by Author(s). Book.
