A signed presentation copy from the Duke of Northumberland of the very scarce first edition of Henry MacLauchlan's illustrated survey of Roman remains in northern England. The first edition of this very scarce work. With a presentation inscription to a front blank: 'Presented to Rowl…and Erington Esq by the Duke of Northumberland' dated 1859. This work is based upon original surveys made by direction of Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland, although the work itself can be credited to Henry MacLauchlan. As called for, the second part bears half-title 'The Watling Street', dated 1852. With the bookplate of Mexborough to the front pastedown.
