Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First edition. Presentation copy. Dated June 10, 1872, "a gift from the author." A collection of brief stories or essays, some with interest in the supernatural, some of which had appeared previously in periodicals. Contents include an early study of a famous true disappearance, "The Mystery of Owen Parfitt" that legend has sometimes attributed to the supernatural. Another example, is an essay "The Hell Fire Club, and how it came to it's end" -- a brief story involving a supernatural vision, and a grim end. No author given on title (written in pencil by former owner); but preface by "W. Maskell". Title page, once loose, now expertly tipped in. Cloth wearing at spine edges. Good. Signed by Author(s).
