Condition: Assez bon. 1 vol. in-8 reliure de l'époque demi-veau caramel, dos lisse estampé à froid, De l'Imprimerie d'Auguste Delalain, Paris, 1829,2 ff., 394 pp. Texte latin avec la traduction française en regard. Fils du prêtre de l'Oratoire défroqué et ancien Jacobin Antoine de Cournand, le traducteur Joseph Cournand fut professeur de de français à Tsarskoié Sélo puis à Saint-Pétersbourg (au lycée impérial Alexandre), et exerça une grande influence sur Dostoïevski. Il s'était rendu en Russie en 1820, avec son frère Antoine (la dédicace imprimée indique d'ailleurs : "A mon frère, Antoine Cournand, chef d'Institution à S.-Pétersbourg") , et ils y épousèrent les deux soeurs Demainville. Joseph Cournand enseigna la littérature moderne ancienne et moderne à l'Académie des Ingénieurs de Saint Pétersbourg, où il eut parmi ses élèves le grand-duc Constantin et le jeune Dostoïvesky auquel il communiqua sa passion pour la littérature française. Etat très satisfaisant (rel. lég. frottée, petit accroc marginal en queue à qq. feuillets, lég. rouss., bon état par ailleurs) Langue: Français.

Bicknell, James Fagan and Edmund H. Garrett, signed in pencil by the respective artist on one impression, including a Bicknell etching after a Pyle painting, signed in pencil by Pyle. Beautifully bound in full Art Nouveau morocco-gilt with morocco onlays.Latin text edited by Clement Lawrence Smith of Harvard University, who also provides a life of the Roman poet. Translations are provided as "versions, paraphrases and explanatory notes by eminent scholars, statesmen and poets."
