This Copy is No. 12.' The signatures are J S Blake-Reed, Edw S Lemass, E------- (not easy to read) , and E B Blake-Reed. Verses translated from the Latin, beautifully illustrated with distinctive black and white illustrations. There are some flaws and small signs of age and use but generally a very good example.

Hand typed, contains letter from the author commenting on contents, also signed to title page to Miss Bruce, Christmas 1955, with Christmas tag typed for errata slip. CONDITION Tan cloth with faded spine, starting at spine ends, cloth foxed top front cnr and along top edge, o/w bright and crisp internally. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Fils du prêtre de l'Oratoire défroqué et ancien Jacobin Antoine de Cournand, le traducteur Joseph Cournand fut professeur de de français à Tsarskoié Sélo puis à Saint-Pétersbourg (au lycée impérial Alexandre), et exerça une grande influence sur Dostoïevski. Il s'était rendu en Russie en 1820, avec son frère Antoine (la dédicace imprimée indique d'ailleurs : "A mon frère, Antoine Cournand, chef d'Institution à S.-Pétersbourg") , et ils y épousèrent les deux soeurs Demainville. Joseph Cournand enseigna la littérature moderne ancienne et moderne à l'Académie des Ingénieurs de Saint Pétersbourg, où il eut parmi ses élèves le grand-duc Constantin et le jeune Dostoïvesky auquel il communiqua sa passion pour la littérature française. Pebbled green fine leather binding decoratively tooled in gilt on the covers, raised bands on the spine, gilt edges and inner dentelles. Coated pale yellow endpapers, all edges gilt, ribbon page marker, notes. This is an exquisite little volume with only very light wear at the extremities. Also known as Quintus Horatius Flaccus. Translated with notes by Henry George Robinson. (Poetry).
