Fils du prêtre de l'Oratoire défroqué et ancien Jacobin Antoine de Cournand, le traducteur Joseph Cournand fut professeur de de français à Tsarskoié Sélo puis à Saint-Pétersbourg (au lycée impérial Alexandre), et exerça une grande influence sur Dostoïevski. Il s'était rendu en Russie en 1820, avec son frère Antoine (la dédicace imprimée indique d'ailleurs : "A mon frère, Antoine Cournand, chef d'Institution à S.-Pétersbourg") , et ils y épousèrent les deux soeurs Demainville. Joseph Cournand enseigna la littérature moderne ancienne et moderne à l'Académie des Ingénieurs de Saint Pétersbourg, où il eut parmi ses élèves le grand-duc Constantin et le jeune Dostoïvesky auquel il communiqua sa passion pour la littérature française.
