Condition: Fair. Red leather boards with elaborate gilt decoration are rubbed and soiled. Heavy shelfwear to edges, corners bumped with boards exposed. Top half of backstrip missing, exposing paper guard. Tail of spine chipped away. Interior age-toned with foxing throughout. Scattered soiling. Previous owner's name in pencil to FFEP and to presentation page. Worm hole or punch to top corner of FFEP and flyleaves. Illustrations and tissue guards present but foxed. Gilt edges still bright, top edge a bit dust-dulled. Binding rather tight.

Full embssd & decorated tan sheep, gilt decorated spine, a.e.g. (mnr chppng hd & ft of spine, mnr edgewear), still VG- copy, from the family library of Major John William De Forest (1826-1906), served with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley, and was a noted American author and poet. First edition, thus, of this anthology of morality tales and Odd Fellows literature.
