First edition, first impression, of this key poetry collection, his first on the theme of war, presented here in a handsome binding. After reading the work, Wilfred Owen described "feeling at a very high pitch of emotion. Nothing like [Sassoon's] trench life sketches has ever been written or ever will be written". In this work and the follow-up collection Counter Attack (1918), "Sassoon's savagely realistic and compassionate war poems had established his stature as a fully fledged poet, and despite all his later prose and verse, and his growing aversion to the label, it was mainly as a war poet that he was regarded for the rest of his life" (ODNB). Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in black morocco, smooth spine lettered in gilt, twin gilt rule on turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Half-title slightly toned, an excellent copy.
