Together with Glass's 1997 opera The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five, it is part of a planned trilogy of operas based on Lessing's Canopus in Argos novels. The opera was co-commissioned by English National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, and Theater Kiel, and co-produced with Artpark, Lewiston, New York State. The opera was first performed at Houston Grand Opera on 8 July 1988. The British premiere was 9 November 1988 by English National Opera at the London Coliseum. This production was broadcast live in the UK on BBC Radio 3 on 13 December 1988.******. Signed by Author(s).

La Belle et la Bete: An Opera by Philip Glass - Based on the Film by Jean Cocteau. Original music composed by Philip Glass. The Philip Glass Ensemble conducted by Michael Riesman. Produced by Kurt Munkacsi. Theatrical production by Jedediah Wheeler. Recorded and mixed at The Looking Glass Studios, New York. The Philip Glass Ensemble includes Philip Glass on keyboards, Michael Riesman (musical director, keyboards), Jon Gibson (soprano saxophone, flute), Martin Goldray (keyboards), Richard Peck (alto and soprano saxophone), Eleanor Sandresky (keyboards), & Andrew Sterman (flute, piccolo, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet). Also includes several additional guest musicians. The cast includes Janice Felty, mezzo-soprano (Beauty), Gregory Purnhage, baritone (The Beast, The Port Official, Avenant, Ardent), John Kuether, baritone (The Father, The Usurer), Ana Maria Martinez, soprano (Felice), Hallie Neill, soprano (Adelaide), & Zheng Zhou, baritone (Ludovic). Contains almost an hour & a half of music. Libretto (in French). La Belle et la Bete, aka Beauty & the Beast. In an interview with Jonathan Cott (printed in the enclosed booklet), Philip Glass stated: "I think that at a certain point of your life you start doing work you've been thinking about for a long time. In the case of La Belle et la Bête and my other Jean Cocteau projects - Orphée and Les Enfants Terribles - I'm finally doing pieces I've been wanting to do for at least twenty years. To me, La Belle is Cocteau's most complete statement about the entire creative process. The film is clearly an allegorical story. We can take it as a fairy tale, a love story, and as a representation of the major preoccupation of Cocteau's life. Many young people today know it only as the "Disney" animated fairy tale (which I haven't seen). But the story interests me less as a fairy tale than as a love story. And as a love story I think it's equal to Romeo and Juliet and to Tristan and Isolde - it's an archetypal love story that goes right to the heart". A very nice clean solid copy. Scarce copy of the CD SIGNED by PHILIP GLASS. SB-32. Signed by Author(s).
