In this, the fourth of his own verse anthologies, John Bowen has made a collection of proverbs and familiar sayings of India and the Near east, on the basis of each of which he has composed an original English poem, long enough to enable the truth of the proverb to be distilled, and short enough to ensure that its epigrammatic brevity is not lost in translation. This anthology brings together for the first time a large number of Oriental proverbs of unusual beauty and vitality, in many of which beasts and insects play a far more important and amusing role than in our own. The reason for this, and for the abundance of proverbs about the camel, is suggested by Bowen in an Introduction in which he assesses proverbs to be 'the oldest, wisest and best remembered philosophy in the world' This dedicated copy has been signed by the author on the obverse of the f.e.p.
