No Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. A 10 1/8" (high) x (approx.) 3 1/2" flat, standing figure of a Chinese official or scholar, created from painted paper, and pieces of various colored fabrics (see scan)The face is hand-painted on a filled white cloth surface; blue robe is also mounted over a fiber filling; black hat is fabric with painted paper detail, hand & objects are cut paper with painted & inked details, belt is pink fibrous paper with painted paper detail; sleeves & lower part of robe are pink & orange-colored fabrics. Figure is mounted on cut-out pasteboard which shows paste marks on the back, where either the "stick" on the backing has been removed, or this figure was originally pasted to another background or page. Backing bears this catalogue mark in pencil: No. 152. Edges of the blue robe show slight age-related rubbing, wear; small spilt in lower rght-hand area of robe fabric, exposing (cotton?) filling, slight fading to fabric around neck area of robe, edges of hat, backing of shoe shows a crease or partial split (to pasteboard backing). This is a scarce & quite fragile type of item purchased from a Cleveland, Ohio based collector of Japanese prints a number of years ago, he purchased various types of Orientalia, mainly from West Coast dealers during the 1940's-50's period.
