Blatt. Condition: Gut. Juli 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts; ? 19. Mai 1864 in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Original menu signed by artists and writers. 4pp. Short tear.André Salmon(Paris, 1881-Sanary, France, 1969):Writer, poet, and art critic André Salmon was an impassioned supporter of modern art and a central figure in the early historiography of the French avant-garde and Cubism in particular.Son of an engraver and sculptor, Salmon was raised in a left-leaning family with little means and did not receive a formal education. In 1897 Salmon's family moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia, where André worked as auxiliary attaché for the French embassy and absorbed pre-revolutionary Russian culture. When the family returned to Paris in 1902, Salmon found employment in a bank. A year later, after meeting the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, Salmon gave up his post and embraced the bohemian lifestyle of Montmartre and Montparnasse, frequenting the café La Closerie des Lilas and contributing to the newly founded journal Le Festin d'Esope. Salmon, Apollinaire, and the poet Max Jacob were also part of the so-called bande à Picasso (Picasso's gang), that included artists, writers, and critics who gravitated around Picasso's studio at the Bateau Lavoir. In 1907 Salmon himself moved into the Bateau Lavoir, where he was one of the few to witness the production of Picasso's 1907 Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (Museum of Modern Art, New York). Between 1909 and 1910, he worked as an art critic for the newspaper L'Intransigéant; initiated a new column, "Le Courier des ateliers," in the newspaper Paris-Journal; and wrote for the periodical Gil Blas. Around 1910 Salmon moved to Montparnasse, where he frequented Moise Kisling's atelier, which had become a gathering place for the artists in the neighborhood.Menu du dîner offert à André Salmon (1881-1969) pour fêter son 70e anniversaire et 50 ans de poésie, le 15 novembre 1951 à la Coupole, Paris, illustré par Marie LAURENCIN en deuxième page. First page with wafer seal of municipal executive of Amsterdam (Sigillu Oppidi Amstelredamensis) and blind embossed duty stamp (Clein segel 3s 1784). The same embossed stamp to the second and third leaves. Light browning, a very well-preserved document. Fold-lines. An intriguing document showing a family's ultimately failed attempt to have Helena Martina van Brussel (1757-1829), then in her late twenties, committed to an insane asylum. The authors note, "having been mentally troubled for more than half a year and being completely insane, the most far-reaching excesses have been committed". They believe that if she is not committed to an asylum, "the greatest calamities are to be feared". The dossier starts with a summary of the case, dated 3 January 1785, signed by an Amsterdam city alderman (H.W. Hasselaar) and another official named Douwes. It is noted where the case is recorded in a special register. After a blank second page, the third to fifth pages have submissions, from the said Douwes, and another signed by members of the family, Gerrit Bonn, Anna van Brussel his wife, Helena's father Paulus Theodorus van Brussel, and her mother Claasiena van Grenhuis. A separate note is added here at the bottom outer corner. On the facing page are medical practitioners' statements, from Hendrick van der Ven, 24 December 1784, and Cornelius Franciscus Nuyens. surgeon, 29 October 1784. Van der Ven states that he gave Helena Spanish fly (cantharidin) between 15 and 20 October - only making her symptoms worse. Nuyens (1750-1800) had had her under his care for eight weeks with no improvement and states that she must be committed. Happily, Helena Martina van Brussel may eventually have escaped the asylum. She was to die unmarried, in the pretty North Holland village of Kortenhoef, at the age of 71.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original typescript court document with autograph signatures of judge and two members of TC Istanbul Third Court. (32x21 cm). In Modern Turkish. 1 p. 10 stamps on front and verso of the paper. The Karamanli dynasty was an early modern dynasty, independent or quasi-independent, which ruled from 1711 to 1835 in Tripolitania. The territory comprised Tripoli and its surroundings in present-day Libya. At its peak, the Karamanli dynasty's influence reached Cyrenaica and Fezzan, covering most of Libya. The founder of the dynasty was Pasha Ahmed Karamanli, a descendant of the Karamanids. The most well-known Karamanli ruler was Yusuf ibn Ali Karamanli Pasha who reigned from 1795 to 1832, who fought a war with the United States in (1801-1805). Ali II Karamanli marked the end of the dynasty. By 1819, the various treaties of the Napoleonic Wars had forced the Barbary states to give up piracy almost entirely, and Tripolitania's economy began to crumble. Yusuf attempted to compensate for lost revenue by encouraging the trans-Saharan slave trade, but with abolitionist sentiment on the rise in Europe and to a lesser degree the United States, this failed to salvage Tripolitania's economy. As Yusuf weakened, factions sprung up around his three sons; though Yusuf abdicated in 1832 in favor of his son Ali II, civil war soon resulted. Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II sent in troops ostensibly to restore order, but instead deposed and exiled Ali II, marking the end of both the Karamanli dynasty and an independent Tripolitania. A descendant family with the same name still exists in modern Tripoli-Libya. This document shows distribution of Tripoli Governor Ali Pasha's succession who died in 1269 [1853] by Turkish court order. There is many successors mentioned on this document from sons of Ali Pasha's to Ziya Pasha and his wife etc. Court order has 24 lines and signatures. Dated on the stamp is June, 11, 1930. May 4, 1874.John Mackay's was once the most beloved rags-to-riches story in America. A penniless Irish immigrant brought to New York City as a child, he'd risen from the infamous Five Points, the nation's most notorious slum. When Mackay sailed from New York en route to California in 1851, he had no name, no money, and not a single influential friend on earth. He'd possessed nothing but strong arms, a clear head, and a legendary capacity for hard work. In the eyes of the times, his road to riches had made no man poorer, and few begrudged him his success. At the peak of the Comstock's "Bonanza Times" in 1876, John Mackay's cash income?from the dividends of the two bonanza mines alone?exceeded $450,000 per month. The only people in the world with a monthly cash income anywhere comparable were Mackay's three junior partners. Their company, The Bonanza Firm, with an aggregate cash income running between $1.2 and $1.5 million per month, was, according to the Spirit of the Times, "The wealthiest firm in America and prospectively the richest in the world." The income and expenditures of the four-person firm exceeded those of half the states in the Union.

Condition: Very good. Paris, January 1, 1795., 1795. Very good. - Over 90 words penned on 12-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Extrait du registre des Arretes du Comite des Finances de la Convention Nationale" watermarked stationery with the committee's heading and pictorial device engraved across the top third of the sheet. The document is an order of the Committee of Finances of the National Convention for the enforcement of the law of December 2, 1794. Roughly translated, this document regarding the restructuring of public health and medical education in France reads: ["Relative to the different propositions of the Section of Paris for the execution of the law of Dec. 2 [or 3] the Committee on Finance has decreed. / 1. That each section can appoint but three commissioners for putting the law into effect, and that these services are not to be paid for this function is to be considered as under their municipal superintendence. / 2. That after each commissioner has verified that which is prescribed by the law, no opposition can be raised: that each commissioner is to report his work to the national agent of the district near the Dept. of Paris. / 3. That the present decree be sent to every section."] Signed "Monnot" and "Dyzes". The bottom corners are darkened. Folded vertically & horizontally, else near fine. The National Convention in Revolutionary France sought to actively restructure public education and health, which led to reports to shape medical education. Reforms were partially based on reports by Fournoy, and they promoted a shift from the traditional theoretical education in favor of a model which would incorporate hospital practice. The French chemist and politician Antoine-Francois de Fournoy influenced the reorganization of medical education towards practical training which led to the creation of three "Ecoles de Sante". He pushed to integrate the fields of medicine with that of surgery. The French politician Jacques Francois Charles Monnot (1743-1825) served as a member to the August 29, 1791 legislative assembly. He was re-elected to that position and voted for the death of Louis XVI. Re-elected 1795 to the "Conseil des Cing-Cents", he specialized in financial matters. The French politician Jean Dyzes (1742-1830) served as a deputy on the National Assembly. He served as "procureur general".

Original Typed and Printed Document Signed by the Author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. A 2 page ÒInter-Office CommunicationÓ between Fitzgerald and director / producer Edwin H. Knopf of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (brother of publisher Alfred A. Knopf) dated July 19, 1937, in which Fitzgerald negotiates for time off in order to spend more time with his wife Zelda. He writes in part: ÒDear Eddie, A sight of me is ZeldaÕs (my wifeÕs) life line, as the doctor told me before I left. And IÕm afraid the little flying trips would just be for emergencies. I hate to ask for time off. IÕve always enjoyed being a hard worker, and youÕll find that when I donÕt work through a Saturday afternoon, itÕs because thereÕs not a thing to do. So just in case you blew off your head, (as David Belasco so tactfully put it), IÕd like to put the six weeks a year, one every two months, into the contract. It will include everything such as the work left over from outside, as indicated below.Ó He goes on to list various stories Òsold but not yet publishedÓ, work Òunsold but in the possession of my Agent in June, 1937Ó, a play Òin possessionÓ, and a few stories Òto write sometime during the next two yearsÓ. He concludes with: ÒSo the total time I should ask for over two years would be twelve weeks to write these things while near my wife. It could be allotted as two weeks apiece for the stories, a week apiece for the articles, three weeks for finishing Act III of the play. Though, if convenient, I shall in practice, use the weeks singly. Sincerely, Scott FitzgeraldÓ. At the time of this document Zelda had been spending time in and out of various sanatoriums and the FitzgeraldÕs marriage was stressed to the extreme. The document has punch holes at the top edge, minor creases from folding, and a few small edge tears. In the later part of his life, F. Scott Fitzgerald found work in Hollywood in the 30s, developing commercial short stories, and writing scripts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His fifth and final novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, published after his death in 1940 as The Last Tycoon, is a story based on the life of film executive Irving Thalberg. Zelda Fitzgerald died on March 10, 1948 in Asheville, NC, preceded by her husband who died on December 21, 1940 in Hollywood, CA.

4 pp. typed on rectos only, signed by Chandler on page 4, dated and notarized below with raised seal. 4to. Chandler assigns film rights for his third novel, completed in March 1942, here still bearing his original title, The Brasher Doubloon as well as the alternate title that Chandler gave it at Blanche Knopf's suggestion. The High Window was published by Knopf in August 1942. "In May of 1942 The High Window was sold to 20th Century-Fox for $3,500 as a second-run or B picture and was released the following year as Time to Kill" (Macshane, p. 105). At the time of the present assignment, Chandler had established a critical reputation but financial success eluded him. He sold film rights to Farewell, My Lovely (1940) for $2,000, and came to regret this intensely when Murder, My Sweet, the film of Farewell, My Lovely, proved a box office hit but earned Chandler no additional money. Rights to his first novel, The Big Sleep, remained unsold, in large part because of the restrictive climate of censorship of subject matter exercised by the Production Code Administration. Chandler was hired by Paramount in 1943 to work on the screenplay of Double Indemnity with Billy Wilder in part because Wilder was impressed by The High Window. Wilder and Chandler's collaboration was a landmark in film noir and marked a change in the climate of censorship in Hollywood, and thus cleared the way for the filming of The Big Sleep in 1944 and its release in 1946. The High Window was filmed again in 1946 and released in 1947 as The Brasher Doubloon, starring George Montgomery as Philip Marlowe. A fine document from an early point in Chandler's decidedly ambivalent relationship to Hollywood. For Chandler, cf. MacShane, The Life of Raymond Chandler (1976). Provenance: 20th Century-Fox Leaves punched in left margin for ring binder, fine 4 pp. typed on rectos only, signed by Chandler on page 4, dated and notarized below with raised seal. 4to.
