    Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Sydney, British Orphans Adoption Society, 1944. Octavo, 31, [1] (publisher's details) pages with 3 tables. Pictorial wrappers slightly rubbed; top corners lightly creased (throughout); head and foot of the spine a trifle worn; rear cover slightly creased and with a very short closed tear; title-page slightly offset (by the author's inscription); a very good copy. Inscribed, dated (1944) and signed in ink by the author on the verso of the front cover. Evelyn Douglas Darby (1910-1985), teacher and politician; 'medically unfit for war service, in 1939 Darby founded the British Orphans Adoption Society which sponsored the formation, in 1940, of the Help the Children of the Allies Campaign to bring orphans to Australia. He extended this charitable work to include children in Australia and, after the war, from Europe' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). Front cover illustration by Stuart Peterson; B.O.A.S.
