PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO BERNARD ("BERND") BRESLAUER IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION. "With dedication and intensity, Thomas Walther, a visionary collector of photography, has been sorting through the seemingly superfluous vernacular photography of this century. Other Pictures is his selection of over 150 [recte: 142] unique images from his 'other' collection, his collection of found images. They are perfectly presented here, giving us the opportunity to appreciate and muse over these singular anonymous masterpieces, images as indelible as any created by the most democratic of tools-the camera." From the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, with bookplate loosely inserted along with several contemporary newpaper reviews.

Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 178 pages. Published in 2000. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 5000 copies. The first and only edition. The Limited Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Regular-sized volume format. Gray cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, all of them anonymous amateur photographers. Text by Mia Fineman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents "Other Pictures: Anonymous Photographs From the Walther Collection". A wide-ranging selection of the best photographs from the legendary collection. "An avid collector of photographs finds himself compelled to look past another vintage print by Walker Evans or Edward Weston. He discovers compelling, magically composed snapshots of a couple, a family, a street scene, or a naked woman. He finds these pictures in family albums, shoe boxes, and at flea markets. With dedication and intensity, Thomas Walther, a visionary collector of photography, has been sorting through the seemingly superfluous vernacular photography of this century. 'Other Pictures' is his selection of found images" (Publisher's blurb). Thomas Walther was a pioneer, significantly preceding such professional photographer/collectors as Tacita Dean ("Floh", 2001), Erik Kessels ("In Almost Every Picture", an ongoing Series), Gilles Peress ("Here Is New York: A Democracy of Photographs", 2002), and the New Yorker Magazine photography critic Vince Aletti ("Male", 2008), among legion other collectors of vernacular photographs, that is, some of the most beautiful photographs ever taken by great unknowns. The best vintage album "finds" now fetch auction-house prices from galleries, rare book dealers, and leading auction houses. They are a testament to photography's status as THE democratic art, resulting in the collecting frenzy that has spilled over into and gripped photography's technological successors in film, video, digital online as well as what "Other Pictures" is, the humble photobook. They confirm what collecting is, finally, all about: Discovering who one is by realizing what one truly loves. An absolute "must-have" title for Thomas Walther and photography collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author/collector/curator: "For Paul Berlanga: Enjoy! Thomas Walther 27 Oct. 2000". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, Paul Berlanga, who is named, is the Chicago-based artist and photography expert. This title is a contemporary photography book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, publication-year dated, and inscribed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws because they have been pored over. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 150 plates. Some of the best photographs ever collected and gathered together in our time by a great collector. A fine copy. ISBN 0944092829. Signed by Author.

Condition: Sehr gut. Ca. 160 Seiten; durchgehend illustriert (s/w-Fotografie); 26 cm. Sehr gutes Exemplar; nahezu neuwertig. - Englisch. - Titelblatt von Thomas Walther SIGNIERT und mit WIDMUNG versehen (für Irmelin und Reinald Nohal / Paris Bar) : ". mit herzlichem Dank für Dinner mit June und Helmut (NEWTON) . 2002 in der Paris Bar" // . The pictures selected here date from the 1910s through the 1960s-certainly the golden age of the black and white snapshot but also, and not coincidentally, the era when photography came into its own as an art form uniquely suited for capturing the texture and spirit of modern life. The exhilarating rumble and flash of modernity that bewitched the European New Vision photographers of the 1920s is evident here in the sheer number of trains and automobiles and television sets and dirigibles and airplanes, and in the fun-house distortions and negative prints and bird's-eye views and mirror images and abstractions. The canonical master photographers of the twentieth century seem to haunt these pictures like a pack of jealous ghosts. We sense the austere lyricism of Walker Evans in an unassuming view of a room's corner with several studio portraits pinned to the wall; a melancholy showgirl standing on the street in a feather headdress and upturned skirt might have been shot by Brassai; a picture of a boy in a field reaching down to catch a baseball has all the graceful resolution of a Cartier-Bresson. There are Eugene Atgets, Alexander Rodchenkos, Man Rays, Robert Franks, Eugene Meatyards, Diane Arbuses, and Gerhard Richters-all anonymous, all manques. The camera sees the world with a blithe lack of discrimination, an alien impartiality. And it is this tantalizing, unpredictable margin of difference that lies behind Garry Winogrand's famously cagey remark: "I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed." Amateur snapshots often bear the traces of a classic slapstick struggle between human and machine, which accounts for part of their charm. We try to persuade the camera to take the picture we want, and, more often than not, the camera refuses to cooperate. But the harder we try, to paraphrase Beckett, the better we fail. The pages of this book are filled with successful failures, pictures that sail past their intended targets and into the foggy ether of a different kind of truth. Among these fortuitous misfires is a blurry, underexposed photograph of a woman standing in front of a fireplace, her head swallowed up in darkness at the top of the frame. In one hand, she holds a drink; the other is raised in a gesture that seems to say "come hither" or "go away," depending on your point of view. She's wearing something short and dark, and her white legs taper off to a slender wisp, as if she's a genie drifting out of a bottle. The mood is smoky, seductive, conjuring up scratchy strains of Sinatra on vinyl filtered through the pleasant alcoholic haze of a very dry martini. As a literal likeness of a woman - a girlfriend perhaps-the picture fails miserably. But as an accidental emblem of feminine mystique, romantic blindness, and the irreducible unknowability of another person, it qualifies as a stunning success.
