Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Signed by Author(s) A really fine book in a really fine DW, this is a first English edition/ first English impression in absolutely fabulous condition. The only flaw is a small ink mark on the reverse of the FEP which has been tipexed out but is still visibl…e on both sides. This was the great writers second novel after "THE ORCHARD KEEPER". This is a great read and you can see how he was progressing towards his later books "BLOOD MERIDIAN" and "THE ROAD". This is NOT an ex-library book, it is NOT remaindered and is NOT foxed the pages are clean, bright and tight. The bookplate is loosely laid in on the titlepage. A rare find, in pristine condition. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition, first printing. Signed by Cormac McCarthy in black ink on the half-title page. 242 pp. Octavo [21 cm]. Publisher's turquoise cloth and grey paper-covered boards stamped in black, silver, blue. Publisher's black topstain. Black dust jacket with whit…e, green, and orange typography, designed by Muriel Nasser. First printing statement on the copyright page. Dust jacket is price-clipped and has the "9/68" code at the front flap?s bottom-right. A Near Fine, unread copy, clean and square. The black topstain is lightly faded. The price-clipped dust jacket is Very Good, with just a tiny closed tear (measuring less than 1cm) at the bottom edge of the front panel, and one very small dark stain on the spine. A nice copy. Signed by the notoriously reclusive author. From the library of the late Santa Fe bookseller Nicholas Potter. Throughout a friendship spanning forty years, Potter?s bookstore served as a frequent destination for McCarthy, where the two shared a rapport rooted in their mutual appreciation of literature, art, music, and history. This volume represents a vital fragment of that connection. The first printing of Outer Dark consisted of a run of 5,000 copies, and was the only printing of the first edition of this work. The book was a commercial failure upon its release, selling less than 3,500 copies. Set in purgatorial, turn-of-the-century Appalachia, Outer Dark is McCarthy?s second novel, distilling his Southern Gothic style which he would continue to explore in his two subsequent novels, Child of God and Suttree. The narrative utilizes an archaic, rhythmic prose to deliver a wandering tale?a harrowing meditation on nihilism. Its publication cemented McCarthy as a singular, prophetic stylist, distinguished from many of his more experimental postmodernist contemporaries through a mastery of the macabre and the mythic. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Author(s): Cormac McCarthy Title: Outer Dark (with signed Orin Borsten card) Publication: New York: Random House, 1968 Edition: First Edition with laid in Card inscribed to Author Orin Borsten Description: Author: Octavo, 242pp., publisher's original… black cloth bound with orange and tan lettering. First printing stated on copyright page. First state dust jacket unclipped with $4.95 price present on the flap. McCarthy s second novel, included is a laid in card signed for Orin Borsten! Orin Borsten was a well-known Hollywood publicist and he also wrote stage and screenplays. Borsten most famously co-authored the William Faulkner biography, A Loving Gentleman: The Love Story of William Faulkner and Meta Carpenter , in 1976. He also has writing credits on the screenplays for Angel Baby (1961) and Outer Limits (1963), among others. A fabulous association and one can imagine what drew the two together was a mutual affinity for William Faulkner. The card displays a vintage 1970s style McCarthy inscription and signature, highly sought after as he signed much more infrequently prior to All the Pretty Horses. Book: VG with some foxing to text block. Spine ends very slightly pushed. Light toning to top edge and topstain. Taut binding, square and sturdy. Sharp corners, clean internally. Nice gilt lettering to spine. Jacket: VG or perhaps a touch better. Chip to top crown and a couple of very small closed tears to top rear panel, some soiling at edges and flap gutters where the jacket is white. The $4.95 price is intact and not clipped. Overall a really neat copy with great association and early McCarthy signature. Inscribed by Author(s).

Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. A superior example. Outer Dark is a novel at once mythic and starkly evocative, set in an unspecified place in Appala…chia sometime around the turn of the century. A woman bears her brother's child, a boy; the brother leaves the baby in the woods and tells her he died of natural causes. Discovering her brother's lie, she sets forth alone to find her son. Both brother and sister wander separately through a countryside being scourged by three terrifying and elusive strangers, headlong toward an eerie, apocalyptic resolution. "A profound parable that ultimately speaks to any society in any time" (Time).

Contact seller4-star sellerFirst Paperback Editions. First Printings. Two octavo volumes (17.75cm); original pictorial card wrappers; dark yellow edge-staining; [vi],[2],3-198,[4]; [vi],[2],3-215,[3]pp. Both volumes are identically inscribed by McCarthy in a contemporary hand on the title pages to William Timothy Burdine and his wife, Edythe Tarwater, usi…ng both his nickname, "Mac," as well as his full name: "For Tim + Edythe / Mac / Cormac McCarthy." Orchard Keeper shows some foxing to inner covers, light wear to extremities, some mild dust-soil to wrappers, and a small tear to base of spine; contents clean; Very Good+. Outer Dark has a slight forward lean, faint vertical crease at spine and left edge of front wrapper, light dust-soil to wrappers, with some scattered foxing to inner covers; Very Good.First paperback editions of McCarthy's first two novels the first set during the inter-War period within a small, isolated town in Eastern Tennessee, and the second set in Appalachia dark, brooding, incestuous, and violent. Both novels were published to great critical reviews, with The Orchard Keeper winning the Faulkner Foundation Award for Best First Novel of the Year. These copies constitute a seldom-seen pair of contemporary association copies: Burdine and his wife were friends with McCarthy, and from 1968-1970 neighbors with the author and their mutual friend, Bill Kidwell, in Rockford, Tennessee. While we have handled numerous inscribed books and presentation copies of McCarthy's works, our experience is that those inscribed to people who knew him during his Appalachian period appear quite infrequently in commerce.
