Autobiographical account of this Brigadier General's triumph during critical airlift operations in which he commanded US Army Air Forces during WWII in their navigation of "the Hump'' at the eastern end of the Himalayan mountains bringing military transport aircraft from India to China, a mission that was critical to the entire Far East air operation. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1964, this copy is SIGNED by the author in a personalized, dated gift inscription to title page to another pilot identified only as Don, recalling their shard airlift operations & wishing him well in his retirement. In addition, handwritten dedications from 6 of Tunner's fellow pilots, other officers, & others cover both front endpapers. Small quarto (6.25" x 9.25") has light blue cloth-covered boards stamped with bright gilt lettering to spine. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with a hint of tanning to edges, completely unmarked. A 1" section of lower-outer fore edge corner of front board shows significant rubbing & fraying; other extremities smooth with only mild rubbing. The unclipped DJ is Good, with rubbing & chipping to corners & both ends of spine, chip to fore edge; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free! First edition. 8vo: blue cloth, 340 p. Near fine in a very good jacket with two small chips; endpaper browned. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO GENERAL A.C. WEDEMEYER: "To General Al Wedemeyer with pleasure and high regards for his services to the U.S. in China, and a sincere "thank you" for telling the J.C.S. and Vandenberg that I should be a candidate to command the Airlift to Berlin in 1948. Bill Tunner." Tunner had run the Himalayan airlift ("the Hump") which supplied Wedemeyer's forces in China. When the Berlin Airlift began Wedemeyer wrote a letter to Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, strongly suggesting that Tunner take it over. With Wedemeyer's bookplate.
