First Edition. First Edition. Very Good condition. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (/ho?mz/; August 29, 1809 - October 7, 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer, inventor, and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law.

Hardcover, cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Over the Tea Cups ? Oliver Wendell Holmes (author of The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table). Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company; The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1891. First Edition, early printing. Publisher's original green cloth, with elaborate gilt device to the front board, blind-stamped design to the rear board, and gilt lettering to spine. Top edge gilt. Glossy coated endpapers. Octavo. Condition: Very Good. Corners bumped with light edge wear; spine shows rubbing with fraying and small tears at crown and heel. Text block clean and sound, with minimal age toning; pages clean and unmarked. Binding firm. Small bookseller stamp ("Jones Bookstore, Los Angeles") to front endpaper. Collector's note: Published in 1891, Over the Tea Cups is Oliver Wendell Holmes's final book-length work and serves as a reflective coda to his celebrated "Breakfast-Table" series. Written when Holmes was in his early eighties, the book takes the form of informal, conversational essays?"tea table" reflections?on literature, society, aging, friendship, and philosophy, many of which first appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. Though quieter in tone than The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table, the work is prized for its graceful summation of Holmes's intellectual life and humane wit. Copies in original gilt-decorated Riverside Press cloth, retaining a clean text block and bright top-edge gilt, are increasingly uncommon. A desirable example of late nineteenth-century American book design and an important closing chapter in Holmes's literary career. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Book will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. Archivally inserted in the leaf opposite the title page is a 15 line letter signed, date 1890 from Oliver Wendell Holmes to Edward Bok in London, ".My teacups will be published in the course of a few weeks." Holmes explains that he's cutting back and hopes for Bok's success in his literary pursuits. Bok became known for his pursuit of famous people. In his Pulitzer Prize winning autobiography "The Americanization of Edward Bok" Bok has written, "He was always interested in the manner in which in which personality was expressed in letters.for this reason.he adopted the method of collecting letters characteristic of their writers. One of these writers was Oliver Wendell Holmes" (Chapter 19). In return, Holmes has written, "Edward Bok has perservered like the widow in scripture.look at Mr. Bok's with such thoughts.and you will have cause to wonder at his pertinacity and applaud the conquests of his enthusiasm." Engraved bookplate of railroad financier Samuel F. Barger pasted to front end paper. Barger was also mentioned in Bok's book and the two corresponded.
