Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First Edition. 319p, octavo. A near fine copy in full red morocco, raised bands, all edges gilt. Bound by R. W. Smith. Archivally inserted in the leaf opposite the title page is a 15 line letter signed, date 1890 from Oliver Wendell Holmes to Edward Bok in London, ".My teacups will be published in the course of a few weeks." Holmes explains that he's cutting back and hopes for Bok's success in his literary pursuits. Bok became known for his pursuit of famous people. In his Pulitzer Prize winning autobiography "The Americanization of Edward Bok" Bok has written, "He was always interested in the manner in which in which personality was expressed in letters.for this reason.he adopted the method of collecting letters characteristic of their writers. One of these writers was Oliver Wendell Holmes" (Chapter 19). In return, Holmes has written, "Edward Bok has perservered like the widow in scripture.look at Mr. Bok's with such thoughts.and you will have cause to wonder at his pertinacity and applaud the conquests of his enthusiasm." Engraved bookplate of railroad financier Samuel F. Barger pasted to front end paper. Barger was also mentioned in Bok's book and the two corresponded.
