Signed by the Author. Octavo, blue & cream boards (hardcover), silver letters, xi + 357 pp + ads. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: It's January 1889. German and American naval forces are engaged in an escalating confrontation in Samoa in the South Pacific. Warshiops are at battle stations. Naval reinforcements from both nations are on the way. The press in Berlin, Hamburg, Washington, and San Francisco is calling for national honor to be defended. At any minute, open warfare may erupt. All it will take is one spark. President Grover Cleveland orders Commander Peter Wake, Office of Naval Intelligence, to clandestinely accomplish one of two things: either somehow prevent all-out war between Germany and America, or win it decisively at the outset to prevent combat from spreading worldwide. Coming up with an admittedly makeshift plan along the way, Wake enlists the help of an unlikely trio he encounters in the Pacific: a Hawaiian artillery officer, a renegade Methodist minister, and a beautiful shyster. Unfortunately for Wake, each of them has his or her own motives for heading to Samoa. The intrigue is as deadly as the action in this novel, which culminates in one of the most significant events in Pacific -- and American -- naval history. Hardcover. Green faux leather over boards, ring binding with white plastic cover, 11 x 13", stamped in white and orange, reading "Photo Free Album." Photo album with 11 leaves, 51 photographs (some tipped in), 18 black and white, 33 in color, various sizes and prints but majority color polaroids. Also included: two newspaper clippings, two drawings, two typed letters signed, two badges, two handwritten letters, one postcard, 5 high school certificates, and one envelope. Album belongs to James P****, of Nashua, NH and documents his time in the Pacific on the USS Kitty Hawk. The first few pages are dedicated to his time before the Navy. This includes high school graduation from Wachusett Regional High School, with several high school achievement letters tucked in, his engagement to Vivian, and photographs of his family and home in Nashua. It then includes a typed letter signed from the Navy announcing his upcoming tour, and moves on to his time on duty. According to a handwritten note on the pastedown, this book focuses on "tour of duty west Pac[ific] April 1967-April 1968, USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63." This section comprises the bulk of the scrapbook, and is full of Navy memorabilia, such as postcards, badges, and a "Golden Dragon" card commemorating crossing the 180th meridian. This section also includes handwritten letters from his young son. Many of the photos and mementos depict James's leisure time on shore leave during his tour of duty. It appears that much of James's shore leave was spent in Japan and the Philippines, and the scrapbook includes many photos and mementos from this time. In particular, James appears to have visited several night clubs while on shore leave with his Navy buddies, and includes tickets to these clubs as well as many photos of a scantily clad female entertainer. Locations documented in this scrapbook include New Dream Japan, Honcho, Yokosuka, Japan; Geisha Night Club, Olongapo, Philippines; Palace Hotel, Tokyo, Japan; Tokyo Hilton, Tokyo, Japan; Shamrock Club, Olongapo, Philippines; and Bremerton Hotel, Olongapo, Philippines. The final entry in the scrapbook is a newspaper clipping concerning a relative of the subject of the scrapbook, and his career in the banking industry in Sterling, Massachusetts. Cover of album in fair condition, interior in good condition. Leaves yellowing around the edges, and pages are fairly stiff. Binding on the front cover is coming apart, and there is wear to both covers.

In 1838, six U.S. Navy vessels set out on a great voyage of exploration. Aboard were several hundred seamen and scientists under the command of Lt. Charles Wilkes. Authorized by Congress, the U.S. Exploring Expedition (also known as the Wilkes Expedition) would explored and mapped the Pacific, Antarctica, and the northwest coast of the United States. A tremendous feat of navigation, the expedition broadened knowledge of uncharted areas of the world and helped expand American commerce, industry, and scientific knowledge. It cemented the nation?s status as a new world economic leader. The USS Relief was part of the Wilkes Expedition. Launched in 1836 as a full-rigged ship of 468 tons and 7 guns, it in the late 1830s and 1840s served as a US Navy store ship. It completed a challenging journey after participating in the Wilkes Expedition, navigating severe storms near Cape Horn, and requiring repairs in Chile. It was also used to carry sick personnel and supplies, ultimately returning from the Pacific, arriving back in New York on March 28, 1840. In 1845, the USS Relief was actively operating as part of the Pacific Squadron, bolstering the fleet's supply capabilities. It played a key role in supporting U.S. naval operations along the South American coast during the 1840s. The captain of the USS Relief was Lieut. Commander Andrew K. Long.Long was promoted by President John Tyler to the rank of Commander in 1845. Tyler had jut a month left to serve as president.Document signed, with ornate engravings of an eagle, cannons and flags, Washington, February 1, 1845, naming Andrew K. Long as Commander, and stating, ?I have nominated and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him a Commander in the Navy, from the 12th of October 1844.?A fascinating memento of the Wilkes Expedition and those who had participated in it.
