Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Handmade palm-leaf book produced on the island of Bali. It consists of eight 9 ½ in. x 1 ½ in. palm leaves, each divided into 2 compartments inscribed in black with Hindu deities or various mythological figures and an inscription in Javanese characters. The leaves are pierced with three holes; edges are stained red; cotton cord through central hole, tied off with knot & a pierced Chinese coin. Bamboo covers stained brown & inscribed with mask design. An original piece of Balinese folk art produced using traditional methods. We understand it is meant to be used as a calendar. No Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Size: 13 ¾ in. x 3 in. A hand written manuscript, with letters incised on palm leaves, and filled in with blue-black pigment. The manuscript consists of approximately 100 palm leaves. Most are written on both sides; of these leaves, at least 14 are only partial leaves (one half or more of the leaf is missing), and at least 16 others are damaged by chipping or splitting. Some leaves show worming, chipping or splitting to the edges. There are also 10 or more blank palm leaves at one end; a few of these are also partial leaves, and one or more leaves show the incised text which has not been filled in with the pigment. The leaves show two central holes, with a later cord passed through them, and then knotted at both ends, the cord runs through the two varnished wooden covers, which also have two matching holes bored through them. The script and the text have not been identified. The wooden covers show some wear, and some of the palm leaves are damaged as noted above, which would affect the completeness of the text preserved here. Sold as an example of this type of book and calligraphy.
