Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Near FNE, 2nd edition, maroon hard cover with bright gilt embossed palm tree decoration and font on cover and gilt font on spine, 170 pps. Portrait of Gilbert with tissue protected frontispiece. Unmarked, clean and tight. Beautiful cover and contents very well preserved for a copy this old. Cover corners gently bumped. Gilbert was one of the few poets to write extensively about Panama. His poetry does paint a picture of what life was like (for him) in Panama at this time - era of construction of Canal. "Gilbert had begun to write poetry about Panama while employed as shipping agent, and he continued to so so for the rest of his life. From "Away down south in the Torrid Zone,' the first line of his first poem, readers were captivated by Gilbert's vision of the tropical pre-canal Panama. His poems in Panama Patchwork, the book in which "Beyond the Chagres" appeared, were called 'documents of life on the Isthmus' by a New York Times reviewer in 1906. His fans called him the 'poet laurete of the . " GIFT quality, a book which through it's beautiful binding, also pays homage to an era in which binding was a most appreciated art.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Most probably a pirated edition. Octavo; pp. x, 166; Frontispiece portrait of the author, twenty additional black and white photographs, illustrating characters and locations from the poems; terra-cotta cloth, lettered in gilt, top edge, gilt; This book is great fun. Some of the worst rhymes ever contrived with an occasional flash of brilliance. Reflects life in the Canal Zone at the time of construction. The excitement of the challenge, the circumstances of the life there. Other editions are often dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, this one is not. Also contains an obituary of the author who died at Colon in 1906. The late author was an official for the Panamanian Railway.
