Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 307 Pages. Inscribed by the author on the title page. No defects noted. Intrior text pages are flawless. This book is a hilarious new mystery from Steve Brewer, author of the Bubba Mabry series. When Loretta Kimball learns her favorite actor is coming to New Mexico for a film festival, she couldn't be more excited. Loretta is the long-time president of the International Michael Girard Fan Club, and she never passes up a chance to see Mr. Girard in person. The festival is in trendy Santa Fe, which is practically a different planet from rural New Mexico towns like Pandora, so Loretta expects a certain amount of weirdness when she and her husband attend. But she doesn't expect murder. When suspicion is cast upon Mr. Girard, Loretta is thrown into the midst of a media circus. She snoops around, endangering her own life while trying to uncover the killer. Every region claims its own resident jester-in-crime. Steve Brewer owns the Southwest. Under his pen name Max Austin, Brewer writes a series of hard-boiled crime stories set in Albuquerque, NM. A former journalist and humor columnist, Brewer teaches part-time at the University of New Mexico. He's a frequent speaker at mystery conventions and was toastmaster at Left Coast Crime in 2011. Married and the father of two adult sons, Brewer lives in Albuquerque. Signed by Author(s).

New (print, book and slipcase all in flawless, pristine condition). From the publisher: "Mistress Raven heads a staff of 14 at Pandora's Box, a 4000-square-foot, high-class Manhattan sex club that bills itself as the 'Disneyland of Domination.' Interspersed with pages made of latex, rubber, colored gels, and other erotic materials, Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas's documentary photographs of the club's highly formalized rules and rituals, its role-playing 'vacations from reality,' reveal both the customers who frequent the club and the women who command them. First commissioned to accompany the Nick Broomfield documentary Fetishes, Meiselas's Pandora's Box is a darkly captivating journey into a high-class sex club that specializes in sado-masochism." Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Stapled as issued, with cover title-page (slightly embrowned at top and outer edges). Author's presentation copy, inscribed "Sir Landsborough Thomson, with best wishes from Edward Lowbury", and with an autograph letter signed from the author to Thomson inserted, 4pp. 8vo (neatly stapled at one corner), Birmingham, 10 August 1975. "There have been many doctor poets, among them Thomas Lodge, Thomas Campion, Vaughan, Akenside, Schiller, Keats, Beddoes, Bridges, and William Carlos Williams. Some have shown the influence of their medical work in their writings. Campion, for example, often used imagery of wounds, madness, and cures in the poems he wrote after qualifying, but not in those he wrote before. It is questionable whether the poetic quality of his writing was enriched by this influence; though the later poems are full of shrewd observations on human behaviour, one cannot assume that he would have been any less observant if he had not been a doctor." Edward Joseph Lister Lowbury (né Loewenberg, 1913-2007) combined a distinguished career as a bacteriologist with an active writing life as a poet. He won the Newdigate Prize at Oxford with Fire: a symphonic ode (1934) and published his first collection, Port Meadow and Other Poems, with the Shakespeare Head Press in 1936, followed by Crossing the Line (Hutchinson, 1946) and, in the Phoenix Living Poets series, Time for Sale (1961) and The Night Watchman (1974). He spent 30 years, 1949-79, as Head of Bacteriology in the MRC Burns Research Unit at Birmingham Accident Hospital (editing, notably, Control of Hospital Infection: a practical handbook, 1975), and was productive in retirement; a Collected Poems appeared in 1993 and a last Selected Poems in 1998. Arthur Landsborough Thomson, a zoologist, was a former President of the Zoological Society of London and Second Secretary of the MRC. Lowbury sends him his paper as a return for one ("Science and Poetry") by Sir Landsborough's brother, the biochemist David Landsborough Thomson. Lowbury describes his own as "what must be the most unsurgical paper to have appeared in Ann R. Coll. Surgeons!". Inscribed by Author(s).

Doris Langley Moore OBE (19021989) was a fashion historian, costume designer and curator, who would, just over thirty years after publishing this book, found Bath's The Museum of Costume (now the Fashion Museum, Bath). She was also a novelist, respected Byron scholar, biographer (of Ada Lovelace and Marie Bashkirtseff, amongst others) and wrote the scenario of The Quest, a ballet first performed in 1943. Moreover, she designed Katharine Hepburn's dresses for The African Queen (1951). A collector of costumes herself, Langley Moore's "most exciting acquisition was the Albanian costume bought by Lord Byron on his grand tour of 1809, which he wore for the portrait painted by Thomas Phillips in 1814" (ODNB).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Kentridge, William (illustrator). 400 copies, numbered and signed by the artist, 176 pages, quarto format, 13-1/2" x 10", printed by letterpress in black and in red, with 67 images bound into the book, hand bound, with a slipcase. 40 copies, 24-3/4" x 19-1/4", four linoleum block prints, cut and printed in Johannesburg, South Africa, signed and numbered, in a cloth-covered portfolio, sold here with the book. Arion Press announces "The Lulu Plays" with esteemed South African artist William Kentridge for September 2015. One of Arion's most ambitious artist books, this limited edition contains 67 drawings by William Kentridge bound into the book. The text is the original telling of the Lulu story by playwright Frank Wedekind, which inspired the silent cinema classic "Pandora's Box" and the Alban Berg opera "Lulu". The sixty-seven images are derived from brush and ink drawings for projections for Kentridge's 2015 production of Alban Berg's opera Lulu, which was based on the two Wedekind plays from the turn of the century, Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box. Kentridge drew with brush and ink on dictionary pages. The definitions are in the background but the opening and closing words, in larger type, can be read. Often, after drawing, Kentridge moves the sheets, rearranging elements of the drawings so that they become collages and can resemble moving pictures. The appearance of the drawings on pages of the book is very different from the much larger versions in the opera set, where sometimes only a detail is used and images can be altered by the surfaces on which they are projected, as well as fractured or distorted by the planes and interfering elements of the scenery. Note that this item includes both the book and the suite of linoleum block prints, which are housed separately in a portfolio. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
