Als Ausgangspunkt dienten die unzähligen Einladungskarten von Ausstellungen und Kunstevents, die der Künstler täglich in seinem Briefkasten vorfand - konkrete Zeugnisse des Alltags der Kunstwelt. Müllenbach übersetzte diesen Alltag, der ohnehin sein Schaffen prägt, in eigene Bilder - in Aquarell. Von Dürer bis van Gogh, von nationalen zu internationalen Künstlern, von figurativen Sujets hin zu abstrakten Kompositionen, spielen die Arbeiten mit der Wiedererkennbarkeit. Müllenbachs 'Halboriginale' sind weder Plagiat noch Kopie, sondern eigenwillige Interpretationen oder in den Worten des Künstlers: 'hand made appropriation'. Der Verweis auf die Appropriation Art ist signifikant - prägt diese doch so sehr das zeitgenössische künstlerische Schaffen und somit wiederum den gelebten Alltag der Kunstwelt, in dem sich Urheber und Rezipient begegnen. Seit den 1970er-Jahren prägt Thomas Müllenbach sowohl das Schweizer Kunstschaffen als auch die hiesige Kulturlandschaft.
