Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. First Bison Book Printing. Translation by Frank Jellinik of "Moi, Pierre Riviere, ayant egorge ma mere, ma soeur et mon frere." (Gallimard, 1973). Softcover volume, measuring approximately 5.25" x 8", is like new. xiv/288 pages. "To free his father and himself from his mother's tyranny, Pierre Rivière decided to kill her. On June 3,1835, he went inside his small Normandy house with a pruning hook and cut to death his mother, his eighteen-year-old sister, and his seven-year-old brother. Then, in jail, he wrote a memoir to justify the whole gruesome tale. Michel Foucault, author of "Madness and Civilization" and "Discipline and Punish," collected the relevant documents of the case, including medical and legal testimony, police records. and Rivière's memoir. The Rivière case, he points out, occurred at a time when many professions were contending for status and power. Medical authority was challenging law, branches of government were vying. Foucault's reconstruction of the case is a brilliant exploration of the roots of our contemporary views of madness, justice, and crime.".…

Add to baskethardcover.

Ravaillac, natif d'Angoulesme. Paris, Augustin Aubry, 1858 First Edition 190 mm x 130 mm 144 pp One of 6 unnumbered copies on Chinese paper, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait in two states. Red half-maroquin binding by Bellevallée, spine with five raised bands bearing the title stamped in gold, cold-stamped fillet along the leather edges on the covers; covers and spine preserved, endpapers replaced. A few rare and faint foxing spots; otherwise, the binding and interior pages are in very fine overall condition. Black-and-white line drawing frontispiece depicting a bust of François Ravaillac, wearing a feathered hat, holding a dagger in his raised right hand, surrounded by a circular Latin inscription identifying him as the assassin of Henry IV ("Franciscus Ravaillart, of Angoulême, parricide of the French") accompanied by the motto "Heu scelus! heu monstrum!" The oval frame is adorned with allegorical motifs, while at the bottom of the composition are instruments of torture and a small animal, evoking the punishment of the regicide. A fine copy, extremely rare as a first edition printed on Chinese paper. …
