    Condition: Good. 1952. First British Edition. 262 pages. Illustrated jacket (priced 12s 6d net) over orange cloth with gilt titles to spine. Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. Slight gutter cracking. Binding is firm. Endpapers have subtle strips of tanning caused by jacket. Previous owner's inscription in pen to front endpaper. Text block edges are a little tanned and foxed with minor scratches and droplet marks. Boards have some moderate edge wear, with slight bumping to corners and minor bumping to spine ends. Boards a little rubbed and marked overall; notable small dark marks to rear. Spine is noticeably sunned to ends. Gilt is dulled. Book has a moderate forward lean. Unclipped jacket has some edgewear. Slight chips, creases, rubbing. Top and bottom edges covered in adhesive tape, thus some staining; surface tear to front flap with loss of text. Small water stain to front panel & tape mark to rear.

The author "was born in 1919 in the Negro slums of Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of nine he went to work in a tinsmithy.
