paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st. Cloth, 240 pages, illustrations (some colour); 27 cm. A. W. Mellon lectures in the fine arts, 1997; Bollingen series, XXXV, 48. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Spine slightly rolled at the crown. Age toning. First printing. Dust jacket, with light shelfwear, protected in a mylar cover. *** "From Mondrian's bold geometric forms to Kandinsky's use of symbols to Pollock's 'dripped paintings,' the richly diverse movement of abstract painting challenges anyone trying to make sense of either individual works or the phenomenon as a whole. Applying his insights as an art historian and a painter, John Golding offers a unique approach to understanding the evolution of abstractionism by looking at the personal artistic development of seven of its greatest practitioners. He re-creates the journey undertaken by each painter in his move from representational art to the abstract--a journey that in most cases began with cubism but led variously to symbolism, futurism, surrealism, theosophy, anthropology, Jungian analysis, and beyond. For each artist, spiritual quest and artistic experimentation became inseparable. And despite their different techniques and philosophies, these artists shared one goal: to break a path to a new, ultimate pictorial truth. The book first explores the works and concerns of three pioneering European abstract painters--Mondrian, Malevich, Kandinsky--and then those of their American successors--Pollock, Newman, Rothko, and Still. Golding shows how each painter sought to see the world and communicate his vision in the purest or most expressive form possible. For example, Mondrian found his way into abstraction through a spiritual response to the landscape of his native Holland, Malevich through his apprehension of the human body, Kandinsky through a blend of religious mysticism and symbolism. Line and color became the focus for many of their creative endeavors. In the 1940s and 50s, the Americans raised the level of pictorial innovation, beginning most notably with Pollock and his Jung-inspired concept of action.p>Golding makes a powerful case that at its best and most profound, abstract painting is heavily imbued with meaning and content. Through a blend of biography, art analysis, and cultural history, Paths to the Absolute offers remarkable insights into how a sense of purpose is achieved in painting, and how abstractionism engaged with the intellectual currents of its time." - Publisher. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. The actual First Edition ( Number Line to 1), not the later edition with a different publisher. 64 color plates, 108 black-and-white illustrations. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. There is a light bit of color fade just off the top edges. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine is not toned. There is a sliver of a wrinkle at the top edge of the spine. There are also two little thin creases below the rear covers top corner. There is a tiny indent on the front cover. The cover edges are in very nice shape, no rubbing. There's no rubbing at the cover corners either. The page edges are perfectly clean. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior the book is in very nice shape. The inside covers and end papers are a light blue. They are all in excellent condition, clean and free of wear. The pages are also exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There is some light toning off the edges of the pages, common with the type of paper used in art books. I'm not finding any creasing on any of the pages. Nor are there any markings. And no attachments, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There is a separate printed letter from Princeton University Press dated August 7, 2000 that begins 'Dear Reviewer.' You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It too is exceptionally clean, just a couple of tiny white spots on the brown part of the front. There are no tears anywhere on the jacket. There is a tiny scratch on the rear. The flaps look terrific. They're perfectly clean. They don't have any wear. The jacket is not priced or clipped. I will fit it with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'In this survey of the origins and development of abstraction in twentieth-century painting, John Golding, himself a noted painter, teacher, and art historian specializing in the period, analyzes the ambitions and careers of seven major artists, each of whom 'had been inspired by the fact that he was on the path to some new, ultimate pictorial truth or certainty, to a visual absolute.' This book is based on the 1997 series of A. W. Mellon Lectures delivered by the author at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. With its wealth of illustrations and highly perceptive insights into the historical background and the individual personalities of the painters under discussion, it provides a scholarly yet accessible approach to an understanding of the content and meaning of abstract art at its best and most profound.'.…
