Trade Paperback. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 232, [4] pages. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads: 1/4/04 Mary--Thanks for all your help and management on this. It was fun to write and it's great knowing you enjoyed it so. I look forward to many more years of working with you. St. Claire. Previous owner's name and notes inside front cover. Told in the vibrant voices of this Irish-American family, St. Patrick's Day is the story of the Riley's of Washington, D.C., who have made their way up from poverty to the well-to-do suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Built around Mary Riley's estrangement from her daughter Mary Kate, the book explores the many faces of love as a family overcomes discrimination and loss to find success and fulfillment, all nudged along by a bitter sweet miracle. This is a volume in the author's Swampoodle Trilogy. P.D. St. Claire is the pen name of Paul Belford, a Washington DC-based executive recruiter. Made up of the first letters of his children's given names - Peter, David and Claire - he first used it for Notes from a Passage, a collection of stories and thoughts that capture the values learned in his own raising and in the course of his life experiences. A native of Long Island, New York, he has lived in the Washington, DC area since 1968. His great grandfather, Michael Moran, landed in New York harbor in 1850 aboard the William Hitchcock, one the hundreds of 'coffin ships' that evacuated more than a million starving refugees from Ireland during the Great Famine of 1845-52. Michael Moran was later to found the Moran Towing Corporation whose tugboats ply New York harbor to this day. A product of Chaminade High School (Mineola, NY), Paul attended Boston College as an undergraduate and earned a MA in Economics at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. Between BC and Fordham, he spent a year teaching Economics at Al-Hikma University, in Baghdad, Iraq, another Jesuit institution.

Softcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near fine. First edition. A nice association copy, inscribed in a handsome cursive with a fountain pen on the title page: "For Peter, 'He will expect more than words in the ultimate count .', with amity and admiration, Seamus, February 1985." Peter is the nickname of Sven Birkerts, and this copy is from his library. Significantly, laid in is an autographed note signed (ALS) by Heaney and written on St. Patricks Day, 2004, on Heaney's 3 x 5" stationary with "Glamor Cottage, Ashford, Co. Wicklow" for its header. It reads to start: "17 March 2004, Sven -- St. Patrick's Day, and M. and I have taken a day to ourselves int the big glen. Ivy and daffodils. Blackbird and horse . . . the upstairs, looking out. Herself, outside, planting bulbs . . . wish you where here, all of ye." Lovely. The note goes onto the other side to discuss a missed chance to get together and some other activities. Birkerts and Heaney both lived in Cambridge, MA, where Heaney taught at Harvard part-time and Birkerts at Boston University. Birkerts is one of our foremost critics. Among other honors, he is the recipient of a Guggenheim, the Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle, and the PEN Spielvogel-Diamonstein Award for the best book of essays. Hewrote of Heaney on many occasions, including several "In Memoriam" pieces such as this long one inAeon in which he describes their friendship: "I use the first name because we were friends. Not best friends ? he had his various true intimates ? but real friends. That?s what I tell myself. We had met at a poetry reading in Cambridge back in the early 1980s, soon after he started his once-a-year teaching job at Harvard. He was approachable, easy to have a drink with, and soon enough a circle of friends had fastened around him. There were dinners, long evenings, at our house and other houses. Seamus, his wife Marie when she was over for a visit, poets of his acquaintance. It was all very gregarious ? we were 30 years younger then. Later, after he had stopped teaching at Harvard, there were still visits, in Cambridge, in Dublin, more long evenings." A touching association as such. This slender book collects Heaney's poems that followedStation Island and is one of 750 copies, 250 of which were in hardcover. This copy is in white wraps with a blue paper dustjacket. A near fine copy with a touch of dampstaining to spine tail and in a near jacket with a little sunning to spine and a small stain to top edge of rear pane; the note fine and particularly special considering it was written on and describes Heaney's St. Patrick's Day in the garden. Signed.

Unbound. Condition: Fine. Original pastel. Image size matted to 11" x 15". Framed. Signed in lower left ("W. Cotton"). Additionally Inscribed by Cotton in discreet white album ink in the upper righthand corner to fellow illustrator and close friend, R. Roberts Baldwin: "To Baldy (the figure on the left) from W. Cotton." Unexamined out of the frame, but all indications are that the image is fine and completely unfaded. Accompanied by a near fine issue of the published magazine. This St. Patrick's Day cover depicts an African-American man dressed in a festive green sash and Irish-style top hat with affixed shamrock, with a liquor bottle between his knees, passed out on the steps of a brownstone, apparently the victim of overindulgence on St. Patrick's Day, while a redheaded, presumably Irish policeman strokes his chin and looks on, displaying emotions that range somewhere between consternation and perplexity. Both a caricaturist and respected portrait painter, Cotton created some of *The New Yorker's* most arresting covers between 1932 and 1951. This particular cover was the first example cited by then-Art Director of *The New Yorker* Lee Lorenz in a 1997 article when he wrote about controversial "politically incorrect" covers published by *The New Yorker*: "By way of illustration, so to speak, consider this arbitrary sample of zingers from a less enlightened age--not quite B.C., but definitely pre-P.C. Will Cotton's covers, skillfully executed in pastel, are memorable for their elegance and gentle wit. He was a gifted caricaturist, and his portraits of people were always warm, never grotesque. In contrast, the cover accompanying this article, which depicts an Irish cop looking at a homeless black man (3/19/38), manages to abuse both the Irish and blacks." This is very likely the most memorable of the 55 covers that Cotton created for *The New Yorker* and is an excellent example of the pervasive institutional racism that was so often indulged by reasonably progressive publications. We have been aware of the cover for several decades and were beyond surprised when it was brought to us by an art historian and dealer.
