A first printing of the first UK paperback edition - Penguin Catalogue No. 1111 - priced at 2/6 on the front cover - published 24th November 1955. which was followed by a uniform set of ten volumes of C. S. Forester's works published on 12th Jan…uary 1956 (Nos. 229, 698 and 1112 to 1119). ***A very good copy in illustrated green and white card wrappers, with the original Penguin style of horizontal stripes. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling but are largely clean and unmarked. No major faults - just some light rubbing and creasing to the edges of the covers. The spine has some light browning but no reading creases. There is no lean to the binding which is straight. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with no inscriptions and no serious creases or tears - just some light browning to the inside of the covers. The paper stock is only slightly tanned with age. No foxing. Issued without a dustwrapper. ***159 pages. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), known by his pen name Cecil Scott "C. S." Forester, was an English novelist known for writing tales of naval warfare, such as the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic wars. The Hornblower novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1938. His other works include "The African Queen" (1935; turned into a 1951 film by John Huston) and "The Good Shepherd" (1955; turned into a 2020 film, Greyhound, adapted by and starring Tom Hanks).'
