One or two minor spots, but an attractive copy with excellent color, in the original printed drab wrappers; outer covering of backstrip a little flaked. First edition in this format, with new illustrations. Mrs. Dorset s poem was first published by John Harris in 1807 in the popular frenzy surrounding the success of Roscoe s Butterfly s Ball. The first volume contains the twenty-first edition of "The Peacock 'At Home'" and "The Butterfly's Ball, and the Grasshopper's Feast" and "The Fancy Fair, or Grand Gala of the Zoological Gardens." - 45 pages plus publisher's advertisement leaf. The second volume is published by Grant and Griffith - the successors to John Harris and contains the 1854 twenty-fourth edition of "The Peacock 'At Home' " and "The Butterfly's Ball, and the Grasshopper's Feast" - 32 pages - illustrated by Harrison Weir. Finely bound in full tan calf with gilt decoration and heavy gilt to the spine, all edge gilt, bound by Hayday. with disks with gilt coats of arms of William Twopeny and Alexander Lawson Duncan pasted to the front end-paper. The external condition is very clean, internally a few small spots to end-papers, pages are slightly toned otherwise clean. The first volume contains coloured illustrations and the second volume contains black and white full-page engravings by Harrison Weir. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.

Harris and Son, Corner of St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1822. FIRST COMBINED EDITION [Moon 217]. 12mo - 6-15/46" x 4-3/16". Tan pictorial stiff card wrappers with decoration and titles printed in black to both front and back wrappers with wear along spine, a small abrasion effecting three letters in the word, "ADDED" on front wrapper, and minor soiling for what is a lovely copy of the book. 24 pp., [1] p. publisher's advertisement, [4] leaves of plates. "The Peacock 'At Home'", which is told in verse, was written by Catherine Ann Turner Dorset, although it was published anonymously, being attributed only as, "By A Lady." The story was written as a sequel to William Roscoe's Butterfly's Ball (which is included at the end of this volume), only this time the story is centered on the world of birds, not that of insects; illustrated with hand colored title page vignette and eight hand colored wood engravings (two engravings on one side of four leaves); previous owner's name neatly penned to title page verso; offsetting to illustrations and minor spotting throughout. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD. Only four copies of this combined edition located on OCLC/WorldCat, and only one of those four being the first edition (University of Cambridge: Cambridge University Library). EXCEEDINGLY RARE.
