Si bien el uruguayo Pedro Figari (1861-1938) estudió leyes y ejerció la jurisprudencia durante buena parte de su vida, su verdadera vocación fue la pintura, a la que pudo dedicarse profesionalmente en la última etapa de su vida, cuando tenía casi 60 años. Sin embargo, esto no le impidió convertirse en una de las figuras fundamentales del arte de América Latina. Fue director de la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de su país. Vivió en Argentina e hizo amistad con figuras como Jorge Luis Borges, Oliverio Girondo y Ricardo Güiraldes. Su obra, llena de colorido y detalles costumbristas, es una celebración de la identidad nacional de Uruguay, pero también de la cultura y la idiosincrasia latinoamericana.
