Bookplate on the front pastedown and a lengthy gift inscription on the title page. Price-clipped jacket is nicked at the corners. The ninete…enth-century conflict between the Hudson's Bay Company and the North Westers, the Pemmican War, is the background for this historical novel. Signed by Fisher on the half title page, and additionally inscribed by the author's renowned student at the University of Utah, Wallace Stegner, on the title page: "and his one-time student, Wallace Stegner." Stegner was a prolific author of fiction and historical nonfiction set mainly in the American West. The relationship between these two writers is the subject of an article by Joseph M. Flora (Western American Literature, Volume 5, Number 2, Summer 1970) entitled "Vardis Fisher and Wallace Stegner: Teacher and Student." In the article, Flora in his analysis of Stegner's short story, "The View from the Balcony," points out that he believes that the character of Paul Latour shares some traits with Vardis Fisher. He writes, "I call the attention of Fisher's readers to Stegner's story not because Paul Latour is Vardis Fisher but because he does reflect a side of Fisher's complex personality. I think Fisher and Stegner readers will find the story of interest in an autobiographical light, for it indicates what one would have expected- Vardis Fisher was an important influence on Stegner. I think that one would also have to conclude that the portrait is also- in part- Stegner's judgment on his former teacher." This inscribed copy represents a nice association copy between student and teacher.
