Sara Louise Arnold, superintendent of schools in Minneapolis and Boston, was also a prolific author of school textbooks, especially for the elementary grades. Her "Stepping Stones to Literature" and "See and Say" series were nationally used textbook series during the early 20th century. "With Pencil and Pen" is a stand-alone text for primary students ".with lessons" as the preface notes, "sent forth with the hope that they may help the children who are learning in our primary schools to put their thoughts into writing." This copy of the NYS edition, a first edition thus, is an early printing but probably not the first. About 5 1/2 x 7 3/8 inches, 151 pages of text, including numerous illustrations, followed by 4 pages of Ginn & Co. ads. Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with a pictorial front cover showing a young girl at her desk working on a drawing. Black lettering on front and spine. Boards show some soiling, a few small stains and lightly bumped corners. Text edges show soiling and on a few pages answers to questions have been penciled in. Previous owner's name in pencil on the fep. Not a perfect copy but still in collectable condition and, after over a hundred years, very scarce in any edition today.

This book takes us on a journey into the heart of early 20th-century primary education, offering a fascinating glimpse into how children were taught language and penmanship. Through a series of carefully crafted lessons, the author provides a structured approach to developing writing skills, fostering creativity, and encouraging observation of the world around them. Rooted in the educational philosophies of the time, the book emphasizes repetition, memorization, and observation as cornerstones of learning. Students are guided through exercises that range from copying simple verses and riddles to writing stories and descriptions based on pictures and personal experiences. The thematic depth of the book extends beyond mere penmanship. It delves into moral lessons, encouraging truthfulness, kindness, and humility through poems and stories. Nature studies, cultural insights into the lives of Eskimos and Native Americans, and glimpses into daily life in the early 1900s all contribute to a well-rounded educational experience. Ultimately, this book's insights into early 20th-century language instruction offer valuable historical context for understanding the evolution of educational practices.
