First edition in French, inscribed by the translator on the half-title "A mon ami de Germon, Terres lointaines descrites de loin mais [tant/tres] desirés. St Louis 18 juin 1900 Max". The recipient Louis de Germon (1863-1938) co-authored with the translator's brother Count Napoleon-Henri Begouën (1863-1956) the poetry collection Vers de couleur (1886) under the collective pseudonym Noël Loumo. The advance and consolidation of Russian power in Central Asia coincided with the expansion of the British empire across the nineteenth century, causing tensions known as "The Great Game". The Prussian soldier, diplomat, and historian Wartenburg (1850-1900) is probably best known for his work Napoleon as Military Commander (1885-1886). He served with an Uhlan regiment in the Franco-Prussian War, seeing action at Vionville, Gravelotte, Orléans and Le Mans. In 1884 he joined the German embassy at Vienna as a military attaché, transferring the following year to St Petersburg, where he remained until 1893 and during which period he carried out the research for the present work. On his return to Germany he joined the General Staff with the rank of colonel, took command of the First Division, and taught at the Military Academy. In 1900 he was dispatched to China with the German Expeditionary Force, part of the international response to the Boxer Rebellion, where he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The translator Bégouën (1862-1900) was a military officer who was educated at Saint-Cyr Military Academy. It was first published in Berlin earlier the same year as Das Vordringen der Russischen Macht in Asien. WorldCat records only six copies of this French edition. Octavo (228 x 138 mm). Deux pages rédigées à l'encre bleue sur un grand feuillet de papier blanc ; numéro "582" de la main de Céline en haut à gauche au crayon rouge. Pliures transversales inhérentes à l'envoi. Cette lettre a été très partiellement retranscrite dans l'Année Céline 2005. Belle lettre évoquant Marcel Aymé : "Nous dirons si vous le voulez bien en simple et bon français que Marcel Aymé a :de la pénétration.[.] Et si Marcel a de la pénétrationmoi j'ai de la vision."Nous ne reviendrons pas sur l'amitié qui unit Céline et Aymé - ce dernier lui rendit même visite àKlarskovgaard en mars 1951 - mais nous nous contenterons de citer un passage du texte que l'écrivain montmartrois rédigea en l'hommage de son sulfureux ami : "Je l'ai connu il y a vingt-cinq ans, avant la guerre alors qu'il était partout célébré, admiré - mais rarement compris - et après son retour du Danemark, pendant les neuf années de souffrances qui l'acheminaient vers la mort. Avant comme après la tourmente, sa conversation faisait apparaître l'idéaliste dont les sarcasmes dénonçaient les cent mille misères d'une humanité cruelle, vaniteuse, boulimique, acharnée à sa propre perte. " Avant ", ses réquisitoires contre les folies meurtrières et suicidaires de l'homme, contre les injustices et les traquenards de la société, avaient la force joyeuse d'un lutteur, fusant avec une inépuisable invention verbale qui émerveillait ses auditeurs." (Ecrits sur la politique 1933-1967) Céline parle également dans cette lettre d'Albert Naud (son avocat entre 1947 et 1951) qui "se promène au Canada" et "va se retenir une Thénardière sur le St Laurent". S'en suit une considération toute célinienne : "Je crois aussi que la prochaine et ultime Capitale de la France sera Montréal."L'exilé danois fantasme ensuite sur un gouvernement mondial à mettre en place : "Et [René] Meyer (sic) ministre de la Justice, toujours, bien entendu ! là-bas ! Vous serez alors vous même ministre de la Guerre au Danemark (en retraite)." En 1947, Céline, poursuivi par la justice française pour son engagement collaborationniste, est reclus au Danemark. C'est en mai 1948, accompagné de Lucette et Bébert qu'il arrive chez son avocat Maître Thorvald Mikkelsen à Klarskovgaard. Ce dernier possède une grande propriété au bord de la mer baltique et invite l'exilé à y séjourner. Le 21 février 1950, dans le cadre de l'épuration, l'écrivain est condamné définitivement par contumace par la chambre civique de la Cour de justice de Paris pour collaboration à une année d'emprisonnement (qu'il a déjà effectuée au Danemark). Le consul général de Suède à Paris, Raoul Nordling, intervient en sa faveur auprès de Gustav Rasmussen, ministre des Affaires étrangères danois, et parvient à retarder son extradition. Le 20 avril 1951, Jean-Louis Tixier-Vignancour, son avocat depuis 1948, obtient l'amnistie de Céline au titre de "grand invalide de la grande guerre" en présentant son dossier sous le nom de Louis-Ferdinand Destouches sans qu'aucun magistrat ne fasse le rapprochement.
