In "What is Fluency?" (Section 1), the authors seek to define fluency from diverse perspectives; the result is a comprehensive look at the many ways in which we think of fluency.2. The chapters in "Essential Components of Fluency" (Section 2) look at aspects of oral speech and communicative behavior that can contribute to impressions of a speaker's fluency.3. "Cognitive Processes Underlying Fluency (Section 3) is devoted to a psycholinguistic exploration of the cognitive processes that underlie speech.4. The studies in "Empirical Studies on Nonnative Fluency" (Section 4) present a range of approaches to characterizing fluency or dysfluency using oral language data of spontaneous speech.
