[Un] Grabado representando un retrato del rey FelipeIII de España, llamado «el Piadoso» (Madrid, 1578-1621), rey de España y de Portugal como Felipe IIadesde 1598 hasta su muerte en 1621. Editado para la obra de c.1650 titulada"Theatrum Europaeum" de Matthaeus Merian. Llevada a cabo por Matthäus Merian, el Viejo, (1593-1650). Merian der Älterefue un grabador en talla dulce helveto-alemán. Estudió dibujo y grabado en cobre con el grabador Friedrich Meyer en Zúrich y en 1619 fue a Frankfurt para trabajar con el editor Johann Theodore de Bry, con cuya hija se casó. Llevó a cabo entonces las obras "Grand Voyages" y "Petit Voyages" que de Bry había comenzado en 1590. En 1627 aceptó como aprendiz a Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677). Más tarde, junto con Martin Zeiller (1589-1661), llevaron a cabo la obra "Topographia" con un total de 21 volúmenes, que fue continuada por sus hijos Matthäus el Joven (1621-1687) y Caspar o Gaspar (1627-1686), y a la cual pertenece este grabado.
