Colour and b/w photographs, extensive bibliography / references. Maroon boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. Moorland ecology and management have been studied intensively in recent decades, bringing new understanding to an area where management practices have often been progressively deteriorating. This is especially the case in picturesque and accessible areas where, to a large proportion of the population, the moorland itself is simply the view. In this timely publication, John Phillips surveys contemporary research and suggests how its lessons might be applied in a directly practical manner. This book is addressed to graziers, gamekeepers and conservationists, who share the common goal of maintaining the vigour of the British highland ecosystem in order to ensure its carrying capacity for the range of species in which each profession interests itself. Also published in a de luxe leather-bound edition limited to only fifteen signed and numbered copies. See our stock number 28772. PREVIOUS PRICE GBP 50.00.

very good dust-jacket, very good large square black cloth, attractive copy. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Trachtenberg on front endpaper to two recipients with first names only: with well seasoned love and more/ Alan. PHILLIPS, JOHN RANSOM. Ransoming Mathew Brady paintings by John Ransom Phillips / Mathew Brady ransomed : essay by Alan Trachtenberg. New York : Manchester, Vt. : [Lanham, Md.]: Clarissa Editions ; In association with Hudson Hills Press, 2010, 244pp., . "This study includes more than 50 oil paintings, 200 watercolors, and 40 late nineteenth-century photographs. In a series of oils, watercolors, and prose rich with historical allusion, John Ransom Phillips portrays the complexity of nineteenth-century photographer Mathew Brady. The photographs Brady made have long served to illustrate an era in American history, most notably his portraits of Abraham Lincoln and the images from the Civil War battlefields he captured. Pairing these photographs with his own work, Philips explores the career of this artist who wanted to make history and who had the genius to look beyond his New York portrait studio to the Civil War battlefields. Paradoxically, Brady sent assistants to photograph his most famous scenes, the battlefields at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Antietam, instructing them to re-arrange the dead to create images that would capture the public's interest.". No Binding. Condition: Very Good. In this autograph letter signed, John Phillips suggests inviting the geologist and mining expert, Mr. Warington Wilkinson Smyth to speak about coal supply. "My dear Sir I think Mr. Warington Smith (27 [?] St ) is the best man to invite as to Coal supply: His style must be good as he is of Cambridge: but whether it be grandiose I doubt. Mr Hand writes well & intelligibly on astronomical subjects. Good success to you. [Sincerely Yours ?]/John Phillips" Written on a folded 5 ½" x 7 ¼" sheet of ivory laid paper dated: "19 October, 1863". John Phillips (1800-1874) was an English geologist and prolific academic writer in the field of astronomy, electromagnetism, zoology, botany, meteorology, etc. His statistical approach to paleontology helped prove the stratigraphy of geological deposits. He identified and named major geological eras, Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, Caenozoic, and demonstrated the mass extinctions during this period. He taught at King's College, University of Dublin, and at the University of Oxford. Warington Wilkinson Smyth (1817-1890) was a lecturer at the Royal School of Mines for thirty years. He was also president of the Geological Society of London and, in 1879, he was chairman of a Royal Commission appointed to inquire into coal mine accidents. He authored numerous articles and books on geological and mining subjects. Condition: Mailing fold lines, otherwise very good condition. Signed by Author(s).
