Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A short tear to dustjacket. Sometimes it seems like you need a PhD just to open a book of philosophy. We leave philosophical matters to the philosophers in the same way that we leave science to scientists. Scott Samuelson thinks this is tragic, for our lives as well as for philosophy. In The Deepest Human Life he takes philosophy back from the specialists and restores it to its proper place at the center of our humanity, rediscovering it as our most profound effort toward understanding, as a way of life that anyone can live. Exploring the works of some of history?s most important thinkers in the context of the everyday struggles of his students, he guides us through the most vexing quandaries of our existence?and shows just how enriching the examined life can be. Samuelson has a joint position at Iowa State University in Philosophy & Religious Studies and also Extension & Outreach. He also works with the Catherine Project, where experienced teachers engage great books with a small group of readers for free. He won the 2015 Hiett Prize in the Humanities. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Presentation copy of the First Edition, inscribed by Grünbaum to Marshall Edelson, a major source of the book's inspiration. xxii, 417 pp; ads; errata slip taped to front flyleaf. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Psychological Issues Monograph 61. Inscribed on flyleaf: 'For Marshall,/who gave me a great/deal of food for thought,/as shown herein,/with much affection,/Adolf.' 'This volume joins the issue with Marshall Edelson's defense of the investigative viability of the single-subject case study method' (front dust jacket flap). For Edelson (d. 2005), see pp. ix, x, 110, 113, 115, 150-151, 156-160, 162, 169, 229, 232, 233-256, 384. '[Edelson] explored such topics as the boundaries between psychoanalytic theory and the social sciences in such books as 'Language and Interpretation in Psychoanalysis.' Edelson explored the scientific status of psychoanalysis in his works 'Hypothesis and Evidence in Psychoanalysis' and 'Psychoanalysis: A Theory in Crisis,' and applied the philosophy of science to the task of formulating and testing psychoanalytic theory' (Obituary, Yale Bulletin & Calendar, Jan. 28, 2005, Vol. 33, No. 16). 'Marshall Edelson (1984) says there have been three important philosophical challenges to the status of psychoanalysis as science. The first two, logical positivism and the claim by Popper that analytic propositions cannot in any way be falsified (and thus cannot meet the crucial requirements he believed demarcated science from non-scientific activities), seem in retrospect 'hardly worth the bother of a response'. But, says Edelson, 'I cannot think that will ever be said about the third' (p. 1). This third, presumably more daunting philosophical challenge, has recently been mounted by Adolf Grunbaum is his The Foundations of Psychoanalysis (1984) . Even Edelson (1984), who contests Grunbaum's claim that single-subject clinical research is without scientific validity, still agrees with his basic philosophical position' (Vann Spruiell, 'The Foundations of Psychoanalysis: An Essay on a Philosophical Book by Adolf Grünbaum').
