Sedgwick's argument for the establishment of a Southern transcontinental railroad route, in which a case is made in favor of San Diego, and not San Francisco, as the terminus of the line. After serving in the Civil War, General Thomas S. Sedgwick (1828-1904), became Surveyor of Railroads in the West. In 1870 Sedgwick was in San Diego, where he worked as Chief of Engineers for the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, later to be renamed the Texas Pacific Railroad, for the US Government. Inscribed by Sedgwick to fellow railroad man and Daniel N. Stanton, "This paper originally appeared in the N Y Tribune May 1, 1869. but the Arguments as Pacific terminus were written to Gen. W.S. Palmer in Spring of 1868. With respects of Thomas S. Sedgwick." Stanton, along with his brother John, organized the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad after the Civil War. Newsheet.
