Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This listing is for both volumes of the 1950 Shortley & Williams "Physics." These volumes were written as the text for an introductory course usually taken by sophomore students of science and engineering. To give the instructor maximum flexibility, there is more information than can usually be covered in a one-year course. Illustrated with line drawings and B&W photographs. As a textbook, there are problems to solve at the end of sections and answers to odd numbered problems are given with those problems. Volume I xiv+472pp+xpp index to volume I. Volume II continues numbering xii + 473 thru 1271pp. Indexed with mathematical tables in appendices. Francis Dudley Williams (1912?2004) was an American physicist. He served as president of the Optical Society of America from 1976 to 1980. From 1941 through 1943 he participated in radar development at MIT?s radiation laboratory, then was moved to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to work on the atomic bomb. The galvanometers he designed were used to measure the thermal radiation produced during the Trinity test in July 1945. In 1946 Williams joined Ohio State University, where he gained an international reputation in IR physics. He and another OSU physics professor (George Shortley) co-wrote this 1950 engineering-physics textbook that remained in print for 30 years. George Shortley (1910-1980) is also remembered as a developer of the professional operations research community. Beyond a decades-long dedication to the Operations Research Society of American (ORSA), for which he served in multiple positions including 14th President of the society and editor-in-chief of its flagship journal Operations Research, Shortley led a decorated career as an operations researcher that culminated at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he worked on satellite systems development. Hardcovers have blue cloth boards with gold lettering & designs on front and spine, but no DJ. Carefully handled and shelved most of their existence, square corners and negligible shelf-wear. Interiors are tight and unmarked with no ownership or notes found. Minor evidence of handling. Copyright 1950. 1950 on title page confirms 1st Edition. Printed in U.S.A. No LCCN, ISBN nor MSR. Due to the oversize and weight of the book additional shipping cost may be requested & required for EXPEDITED and OUT-OF-U.S.A. shipment in accordance with destination.
