[ circa 1801-1816 ] Un mention manuscrite au crayon indique au verso : "Les mots "Le Comte Roger-Ducos" ont été écrits par le fils du Consul". Né à Montfort-en-Chalosse, Pierre-Roger Ducos (1747-1816) fut consul provisoire, au début du Consulat, après Napoléon Bonaparte et Sieyès. Le peintre Quenedey s'associa en 1788 avec Chrétien, l'inventeur du physionotrace, puis partit exercer de son côté à Paris dès août 1789 jusqu'en mai 1796. Il partit ensuite à Hambourg et ne revint que 5 ans plus tard. Très intéressant exemplaire (rouss.) Langue: Français.

Januar 1817 in Paris) war ein französischer Komponist, dessen Hauptbedeutung auf dem Gebiet der Opéra-comique liegt. - Kupferstich unter Verwendung der sogenannten Physionotrace (aus französisch physionomie Physiognomie" und tracé Umriss") ist ein von 1786 bis um 1830 vor allem in Paris gebrauchtes Gerät in der Art eines weiterentwickelten Silhouettierstuhls zur Rationalisierung der Herstellung von Profilporträts. A physiognotrace or physionotrace is an instrument designed to trace a person's physiognomy, most specifically the profile in the form of a silhouette: it originated in France where it is known as the physionotrace. It was invented by Gilles-Louis Chrétien in 1785. This book consists in two series, which are : "1ère série - La société parisienne à la veille de la Révolution : portraits dessinés par Quenedey et gravés par Chrétien (1788-1789)" and "2ème série - Au temps de la Révolution. Citadins de Paris et parisiens par occasions : portraits dessinés et gravés par Quenedey (1789-1796).". 812g.

Nouvelle édition illustrée de ce catalogue des 1800 premiers portraits au physionotrace contenant les deux premières séries seules publiées : « La Société Parisienne à la veille de la Révolution : Portraits dessinés par Quenedey et gravés par Chrétien (1788-1789) » et « Au temps de la Révolution, citadins de Paris et Parisiens par occasion : portraits dessinés et gravés par Quenedey (1789-1796) ».Environ 120 illustrations. Chaque notice est composée d'une description sommaire du portrait accompagnée d'une biographie du personnage. Invention du graveur Gilles-Louis Chrétien et du dessinateur Edme Quenedey, le physionotrace fut un instrument grâce auquel on traçait mécaniquement des portraits. Il apparaît à la fin de l'Ancien Régime et sera utilisé jusqu'en 1830. Rare.

Condition: Lievi fioriture. Non comune esempio di ritratto ottenuto con la tecnica del Physionotrace, strumento meccanico-ottico per la riproduzione semi-automatica del profilo del soggetto; la silhouette, a grandezza naturale (grand trait) o in scala, veniva arricchita di dettagli da un miniaturista ed incisa su piastra per la riproduzione. La tecnica venne sviluppata attorno alla metà degli anni 1780 da Gilles-Louis Chrétien (1754-1811), che ebbe in Quenedey dapprima un collaboratore e poi un affermato concorrente. Sicuramente il più noto sistema pre-fotografico di ritratto ottico-meccanico, il Physionotrace si diffuse in Europa nel corso del XIX secolo, tanto per la committenza aristocratica ed altoborghese, con l?affermarsi della moda delle silhouette, quanto per la produzione di raccolte di immagini di personaggi celebri; la dagherrotipia e la fotografia portarono rapidamente all?oblio questa affascinante quanto macchinosa tecnica. Curioso e raro.

Im Unterrand der Platte bezeichnet "Dess(in) et Gr(avure) par Bouchardy Suc(cesseur) de ChrÈtien inv(enteur) du Physionotrace Palais Royale No. 82 ? Paris". In schwarz lackiertem, zeitgen?ssischem Holzr?hmchen mit reicher Stuckverzierung. Wei? hintermaltes Glas mit oktagonalem Bildausschnitt mit umlaufender gemalter Kante in Gold und Schwarz (Gold teilweise etwas abgesplittert). Sehr gut erhalten. Von gro?er Seltenheit. Der Violincellist Gilles Louis ChrÈtien (1754-1811) stellte der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Paris 1786 den von ihm erfundenen Physionotrace-Apparat vor. Er entsprach in seinen Grundz gen der Apparatur, welche bereits Lavater zum Silhouettieren benutzte, nur da? hier der Zeichner die Konturen des Gesichts nicht mit der freien Hand nachzeichnete, sondern dazu einen Storchenschnabel benutzte. Das Physionotrace war im Gegensatz zur Silhouette ein teilmechanisiertes Abbildungsverfahren. Auf dem Weg zur Mechanisierung der Abbildung ohne die eingreifende Hand des K nstlers, stellt es die letzte Stufe vor der Photographie dar; durch seine Reproduzierbarkeit geht es sogar ber die Daguerreotypie hinaus, die ja ein einmaliges Bild war, von dem keine weiteren Abz ge gemacht werden konnten. Das fertige Physionotrace-Portrait ma? im Durchmesser 5-7 cm und wurde in einem weiteren Arbeitsgang in Kupfer gestochen. Von dieser Druckplatte konnten bis zu 2000 Abz ge angefertigt werden, in aller Regel wurden aber kaum mehr als ein Dutzend Drucke angefertigt. Die Portraits wurden z.T. auch koloriert. Das Verfahren erlangte aber ber Frankreich hinaus kaum gr??ere Popularit?t. Edme Quenedey des Riceys (1756-1830), ein Kupferstecher und Radierer, der 1788/89 bei ChrÈtien arbeitete und sich dann selbst?ndig machte, war zwar auch in Br ssel und Hamburg t?tig, jedoch ist ber diese Zeiten bisher wenig bekannt. In den USA wurde das Verfahren wohl 1796 von J.J. Boudier eingef hrt. Auch Charles Balthazar Julien de Fevet Saint-Memin (1770-1852) bte dort das Verfahren u.a. in New York zusammen mit seinem Landsmann Thomas Bluget de Valdenuit aus und schuf dabei auch Physionotrace-Portraits mehrerer US-Pr?sidenten. Der Miniaturmaler Bouchardy (pËre - 1797-1849) - sein Vorname ist nicht sicher berliefert - bernahm nach ChrËtiens Tod 1811 dessen Atelier. ?ber sein Leben wei? man gesichert nur, da? er einer auf Miniaturmalerei spezialisierten Portraitistenfamilie entstammte, ob sein vermutlicher Sohn Etienne ebenfalls Pysionotraces verfertigte ist fraglich. 1932 erschien in Paris das Buch "Les portraits au physionotrace graves de 1788 ? 1830. Catalogue nominatif[.]" von RenÈ Hennequin, die alle bis dato dem Verfasser bekannt gewordenen Physionotrace-Portraits katalogisierte. Ob vorliegendes Physionotrace dort angezeigt wird wei? ich nicht, da mir das heute selbst schon sehr seltene und gesuchte Werk nicht zur Verf gung stand (von Hennequin gibt es noch weitere Ver?ffentlichungen zum Thema, u.a. eine Biographie Edme Quenedeys). Empfehlenswert ist auch der sehr gut recherchierte Wikipedia-Artikel zum Thema, dem ich ein paar neue, mir bisher unbekannte Daten entnahm. Sprache: fr.
