Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Samuel Pickwick is a fictional character and the main protagonist in The Pickwick Papers (1836), the first novel by author Charles Dickens. One of the author's most famous and loved creations, Pickwick is a retired successful businessman and is the Founder and Chairman of the Pickwick Club, a club formed to explore places remote from London and investigate the quaint and curious phenomena of life found there. Although he is the main character in The Pickwick Papers Samuel Pickwick is mostly a passive and innocent figure in the story around whom the other more active characters operate. Having an almost childlike simplicity, Pickwick is loyal and protective toward his friends but is often hoodwinked by conmen and poseurs. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition (?); First Printing. Blue cloth with gilt titles and illustrations. Sunned spine along with general edge, corner and surface wear. Some small scuffs on front hinge but no parting. Light interior toning. Appears to be printed on hand-laid paper. Title page in green type. No date but ca. 1897.; B&W Illustrations; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 128 pages; I collated this copy with a copy on line. This copy does not have four pages of ads in the rear. I cannot determine if the first printing had the ads or not. I see no evidence of remov al of the ads. Also, in this copy, between pp. 78 and 79 there is a facsimile of the original title page of The Pickwick Papers, that is not in the on-line copies. Finally, this copy comes with ten 5 X 7 1/2, B&W illustrations from The Pickwick Papers plus a small card that reads, "Purchased at the Old Curiosity Shop," and another small presentation card with an illustration from, "Dickens' Old Curiosity Shop." Interesting book about Dickens and his world with accompanying ephemera.
