    Roy. 4to., First Edition thus, with an engrave coloured frontispiece (original tissue guard present), illustrated title in red, blue and sepia, printed title, 30 full-page chromo-lithographed plates (all original tissue guards present), 7 engraved and coloured maps, and 4pp Family Register (partially completed by hand) engraved in red and black, some moderate damp-staining to lower half of first few leaves, some generally light and inoffensive age-staining (mainly marginal); handsomely bound in original full pebble-grain leather, boards with debossed decorative multiple frame border enclosing stylised floral lozenge, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip gilt laid down, gilt edges primrose endpapers, a very good, crisp, firm copy of a most attractive edition. The Family Register, placed between the Testaments as usual, is completed in manuscript for the Phillips family; James and Agnes Phillips were married at Salisbury Street, Glasgow in August 1863. With separate printed titles for the New Testament and Psalms. A SOLID COPY OF ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST FAMOUS MID-VICTORIAN FAMILY BIBLES.

    Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dore, Gustave, et Al. (illustrator). First Edition. Beautifully designed rare near very good volume. Stated at prefatory page with ten commandments: "Entered according to Act of Congress, by A. J. Holman & Co., in the year 1873, in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C." Latest date found of 1877. Massive oversize 10 1/2" x 12 3/4" x 4 1/2" design weighing in at over 15 lbs. Smooth, tooled and embossed, dark brown conditioned leather boards with embossed foliar cover design at front and spine, moderate shelf, corner wear, nick, rub. Four raised bands at spine. Pages very good or generally near fine; several rich in illuminated color. Few with moderate discoloration; one found with open tear apprx. 1.5 x 1.5" at edge. Found four-leaf stem (likely larger than clover) in few places in volume; rather amazingly has not left mark or tanning. Also, a loose cloth bookmark or similar set in: "Esther". Two wonderfully crafted and functioning brass clasps hold volume shut and straight. Presentation at front, Birth, Marriage, Death and Memorandum pages at center are without writing. Gilded text block at all sides with red uniquely incorporated at angles. Bind good; hinges reinforced. Profusely and generously illustrated throughout with color maps, rich color and b&w, and impressive artistic depictions by Gustave Doré among many other masters of pen and brush. Rare near very good, clean example. This is Holman's Pictorial Family and Self-Explanatory Edition of The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and King James or Authorized Edition of the New Testament, A.D. 1611. Translated out of the original tongues with marginal references with the former translations diligently compared and revised.
