At the turn of the century, Europe and America abounded with aeronautical theorists, whose only successful flights were those of their own imaginations. There were, however, a select few who brought a reasoned scientific approach to the question of powered flight, pre-eminent among twhom were Orville and Wilbur Wright. Once the WRights had demonstrated, with their 1903 and 1905 Flyers, that powered flight was not only possible but practical, there soon emerged a host of fellow pioneers, each determined to take part in and develop this new and challenging means of locomotion. Men like Bleriot, Cody, Farman and Roe, who blazed their own highly individual trails to success; men (and women) like Lilian Bland, Ellehammer and Phillips, whose efforts, though of lesser significance historically, were no less praiseworthy; and men like Curtiss, Fokker, Grahame-White, the Moranes, the Shorts and the Voisins, who laid the commercial foundations of a new world-wide industry.
