Hardcover without dust jacket. Red covers with block spine and gold lettering to spine. Mild fading to covers with wrinkling to head and tail of spine. Some mild discoloration to top, bottom and fore edges. Signed by author on ffep reading Inscribed for Donald & Boys with best wishes Jakob Rosenberg May 1961. Pages clean and unmarked and filled with illustrations. Previous owners name to ffep. The content of this book was presented as a series of eight lectures under the auspices of the Lowell Institute in Boston in January 1956. The text has been revised for publication but may still suffer from the fact that it was conceived as a sequence of oral presentations with lantern slides, and not as coherent reading matter. The choice of master drawings, old and modern, as a subject for public lectures no longer needs justification. The auto chose these eight artists to showcase. Pisanello, Leonardo, Raphael, Durer, Rembrandt, Watteau, Degas and Picasso.
