First French edition, the scarce Grand edition de lux limited first edition with gorgeous cream vellum binding, gold lettering and pictorial cover design, high quality paper, silk yellow ties, top edge gilt and dozens of tipped-in color plates by Arthur Rackham. This is #74 out of only 270, with only 20 being signed by Rackham. Illustrated chapter head pieces. Map of Kensington Gardens printed on the FFEP. Quarto, 12" x 9." Remarkably has both of its original yellow silk ties, one still attached (quite scarce). OVERALL CONDITION NEAR FINE with 48/50 plates. First French edition published a year after the first English edition illustrated by Rackham at Hodder & Stoughton. Limited edition of 270 for this luxury edition in special binding. The white or vellum paper cartons were reserved only for luxury prints of works illustrated by Arthur Rackham. The color plate printing process was developed specifically to reproduce the delicacy of the watercolors of Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of 250 copies. The other 20 being printed on Japanese paper and signed by Rackham. This edition is very sought after and quite scarce in this condition. The more common first French trade edition, published the same year, was bound with cloth and contained only 24 plates. CONDITION In Near Fine antiquarian condition. The final two plates are missing. The remaining 48 color plates are in excellent condition. Square spine with firm hinges and joints and tight boards and pages (scarce as the boards often bow). Corners are sharp and crown and heel of spine unrubbed (scarce!) Just some rubbing and light soiling to the all-white vellum (per usual). The interior is beautifully clean and free of writing, stamps and ex libris marks. Pages are crisp. One page corner bent. Minimal foxing, mostly to some of the outer page margins/edges. Text pages are a creamy white and quite striking. Comes with BOTH original yellow silk ties. A magnificent and scarce first limited edition of a beloved all-time classic in high grade collectible condition.

In folio grande; set completo delle 12 suite di tavole originali che Arthur Rackham utilizzò per illustrare Peter Pan, il capolavoro ed uno dei libri più significativi della letteratura per ragazzi, opera del grande drammaturgo e scrittore scozzese, Sir James Matthew Barrie, I baronetto, più noto semplicemente come J. M. Barrie (Kirriemuir, 9 maggio 1860 Londra, 19 giugno 1937). Esemplare appartenuto al celebre caricaturista ed illustratore italiano, Umberto Tirelli, come attesta anche l'ex-libris applicato all'interno della scatola. La scatola contente il volume è probabilmente stata fatta eseguire da Tirelli direttamente dall'editore Hachette. Infatti, a differenza degli altri esemplari conosciuti, che presentano al piatto editoriale una scritta su foglio in nero che riprende il titolo, il nostro esemplare, vede al piatto anteriore della scatola, applicato in apposito spazio, una tela verde con titolo impresso in oro, del tutto identica a quella presente nel frontespizio all'interno del volume. Dato che per poter avere un'altra tela del tutto identica a quella della legatura si sarebbe dovuto avere un altro dei 100 esemplari stampati, è probabile che Tirelli che era solito risiedere a Parigi, abbia chiesto ad Hachette di realizzare una scatola appositamente per lui con, appunto, il frontespizio di un altro esemplare. Legatura originale editoriale con titolo impresso in oro al piatto anteriore. Lacci in seta. Il nastro originale centrale in seta è probabilmente stato sostituito nel corso degli anni mentre i lacci per la chiusura del volume sono chiaramente originali. Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Le tavole risultano montate ognuna entro il loro passe-partout originale. Primissima edizione delle suite di 12 tavole della celeberrima visione di Rackham delle avventure di Peter Pan. L'edizione francese del "Portfolio" delle tavole di Peter Pan, fu la prima edita in assoluto e venne stampata in soli 100 esemplari numerati (il nostro è l'esemplare numero 52), seguirono poi un'edizione inglese nel 1912 in 500 esemplari (anche se sembra che non ne furono tirate più di un centinaio di copie) ed un'edizione americana nel 1914 edita da Brentano, questa in 300 copie. Il volume si avvalse di un'introduzione di Robert de la Sizeranne (Tain, Drôme, 1866 - Parigi 1932), celebre scrittore francese che fu tra i divulgatori, nel suo paese, delle vedute estetico-religiose di J. Ruskin. In questa versione le tavole sono notevolmente più grandi rispetto a quelle comparse nel volume in 8° uscito nel 1906 e vennero ritirate nuovamente in toto. "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" è stato pubblicato nel 1906 ed è stato uno dei primi successi di Arthur Rackham. Il celebre illustratore britannico iniziò l'attività di illustratore fin dal 1893. I suoi primi lavori che gli diedero una certa fama, sono le illustrazioni per le fiabe dei fratelli Grimm (1900) e Rip van Winkle, edito nel 1905 ma è con l'uscita nel 1906 del "suo" Peter Pan che l'artista ottiene uno straordinario successo e la fama fino ad esser considerato uno dei più importanti illustratori del suo tempo. Rackham vinse anche una medaglia d'oro all'esposizione internazionale di Milano del 1906 ed un'altra all'esposizione di Barcellona nel 1911. Questa qui rappresentata è una delle sue opere più rare e la limitatissima tiratura la rende difficilissima a reperirsi. First edition, 100 copies, good copy. Very rare. Rif.
